As many of you know I invest, and I do much better than most. It took me fifty years to develop what I do and how I do it and like Hunter S. Thompson said about himself and drugs, “I wouldn’t recommend it for everyone, but it’s worked pretty well for me.” No one has ever taken my advice fully, but I feel good that a few have started down a path to enrich themselves.
Because I invest I get a lot of advertisements and come-ons from “the financial pros.” Their appeal to someone is “We know better than you so give us your money.”
Recently, I got one from a firm up in Baltimore, Stansberry Research. There pitches are typically:
Dump your stocks now,
Dump your money now,
One man has outstripped the market,
This person predicts a massive stock market event.
As the Stock Gumshoe points out these folks are always predicting this stuff, eventually they’ll be right.
Recently I got one from “Your Investment Style, 483 Green Ln, London”
Here’s the start of it:
Dear Reader, Massive changes are underway in America. Most people — including our leaders — have failed to notice. Or perhaps, they just don’t care… But as you’ll see in this blistering exposé… A radical new force is setting off the biggest power shift in modern history. Barron’s estimates it’s already created between 20,000 and 200,000 new millionaires so far. And one former hedge fund manager believes this is just the beginning.
… And it goes on. Many of these emails have this sort of economic dread, or promise of huge percent upside, or some attack on the current political leadership.
The email said it was coming from a partnership program with Stansberry Research. London? Huh. Must be their financial district. I decided to look up the address in Google Maps:

I’m thinking I’ll see a sleek new high rise. No, I see a London dreary row house. It’s the one behind the guy in the mask waiting for a bus. Next to the dental clinic with the big white sheet on the bay window. Google has a feature that you can scroll over some to the buildings, (the one’s that display a blue circle with a little downward pointing tab) and it will tell you the name of the occupant or owner – something like that. I scroll over and “Fidelisco Capital Markets Ltd” comes up. I cut and paste that into Google – Whoa! Lookey-here:

Okay, old Fidelisco has had stuff withdrawn. They were doing stuff in Cyprus and now they aren’t. This is super shady and maybe a lot of what they do is illegal or at a minimum “in a gray area.”
Maybe the guy waiting for the bus is the president of this firm? Who knows? But this is the sort of advice Stansberry churns out via reference.
Great job boys. Lemme see. I still got my wallet? Good. I’ll just back out the door. Keep your hands where I can see them.
