83 Days until the election on November 3rd
163 Days until the Inauguration on January 20, 2021
My apologies, in my excitement to get this done I made some mistakes.
The original YouTube link did not work. An embedded link is now provided, which I hope will work. There were several errors in the original. Hopefully, I have corrected all or most.
Great job! I noticed a few things:– – – – Kat’s last name is Robichaud (typo in her website too)
Today is my birthday and this is a hard time of year to have a birthday.
First off there’s the remembrance of the bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima just before this day. Then Kieth Richards has his birthday around now, and Herbert Hoover and I share the same day as well.
If it wasn’t for Hoover we wouldn’t have standardized traffic lights or quart milk bottles. I went to Japan on a kite flying trip with his Grandson, Pete, and his wife Meredith back in 1983.
Speaking of my birthday Shelby put together a fabulous video of people wishing me happy birthday and I’m sure all of you on the video are wondering who some of the others are so here’s a rundown with timestamp.
Here’s the video and the rundown.
(Apologies if I miss-spelled any names or got them completely wrong. But I have an excuse! I’m old!)
00:00 Shelby leads off,
00:41 Ruth Wyand sings and she is a fabulous blues guitar player (ruthwyand.com) See Kat below for more.)
01:41 Brenda & Felix Anderson – my wonderful in-laws
01:50 Kate Anderson as Bryce Holliwell, my alter ego (Bryce not Kate). Fabulous job darling! I love having impersonator(s). Kind of puts me in league with Elvis.
3:19 My Nephew, Tyler Anderson, being very excited. Thank-you for the sign out front letting everyone know how old I am.
3:27 My brother, Rob, and his lovely wife, Deborah.
4:09 Mi Ann, Corey’s friend. Corey was a kite flying buddy of mine. Mi Ann told me that she was gong to San Francisco to a music festival. I said I hadn’t been to San Fran to listen to music since I heard SteppenWolf at the Avalon Ballroom. “Oh which tour was that?” asked Mi Ann. Apparently, she’s into retro rock tours. “Tour? It was the week after ‘Born to be Wild’ hit #1.” I got an “Oh” response. (As in “Oh, you really are old!”) See Kat below for more.
4:16 Karen Anderson, mother of Tyler, married to Shelby’s brother Ben ( and mother of Claire and Mitch)
$:21 Gwen Sichol who lives next door to us
4:59 Katie, my daughter, and husband Jon, and little Disco (due in the world on September 18th)
5:06 Darlene and Ron from our Rhine River cruise, this time last year.
5:27 Mary Brauer-Cox, whom I worked with a AT&T. We used to sneak out of work to go down and eat croissants, drink coffee and talk about life.
5:33 Annie and Sam – kite flying pals from Michigan. Now into tri-athelons.
6:02 Mitch, the other nephew
6:04 Ed Barnhardt – Ed has some wonderful Great courses (Maya, Inca, Mound builders of the SW) and just finished a travel video/course to the Mayan world, www.mayanexploration.org
6:39 Kellye Brill who is selling real estate on the Outer Banks and a great editor
6:44 Heather, who cuts Shelby’s hair
7:00 Elaine Emmi – whom I met in Switzerland in 1967.
7:07 Maggie, Mother of Karen Anderson
7:10 Andy Anderson, husband of Bryce Holliwell impersonator Kate.
7:45 Lucy Haggerty, my personal assistant for decades and the only reason I get anything done other than when Shelby …
7:51 Alex Kinnaird, my son, chillin’ on the hammock
8:17 Claire Anderson, my niece and reading buddy
8:22 David and Allison Hamme, with who I went to Angkor Wat. Both are active in the Mayan conference in Davidson, NC. And their latest venture is
https://www.lostworldsbeer.com
8:34 Walter and Patricia Wells – Shelby took a cooking class from Patricia at her home in Provence. I tagged along and helped Walter drink the wine. (There’s a lot of wine in Provence.)
8:52 Amy, Andy, and Brooke – the heartbeat of The Learnasium, the folks who are teaching Shelby and I how to make videos. (Facebook – Learnasium) and
https://www.powerupvideo.com/learnasium
9:00 Richard Auguston – who wins the chicken award. Lives on the Outer banks. Only goes out when it’s raining and the wind is blowing to put up the power lines. Heck of a guitar repair man. Posted Jim Morrison’s mug shot and I had to stop and ask myself if it was Richard.
9:09 Shawn and his wife – Shawn is the guy you want if you need to figure out what to do with your life. He’s Canadian. I don’t really know him. I know his wife. He didn’t even let her appear (Nice move Shawn!) She did a shout-out from the side.
9:25 Eileen Mitchard – Looking fabulous. The mother of Alex and Katie. You’re going to be a grandmother soon!
9:54 Lance Kinnaird – Son of Rob, musician in Portland. Hey, they don’t just riot there ya know. (He posts his upcoming gigs on his facebook page.)
10:10 Judith and Jack – More Rhine River buds.
11:10 David Wilk – I played at his house when I was in the 5th grade. He now publishes books. www.booktrix.com
11:21 Roger Chewning – A kite flying buddy who ran kite festivals for years. He kept inviting me to come announce and I could never make it so he started “uninviting” me. The tradition continues!
11:38 Ben Anderson – brother of Shelby. (Btw His performance stunned his younger son, Tyler, for it’s animation and emotionality.)
11:49 Tere – Cut my hair and did Shelby’s when we lived on Hatteras Island. Her dad had a hot dog stand where he decorated the back wall with album covers. (I’d say old but seems redundant.) Vanilla Fudge (“You keep me hanging on”), and Cold Blood (Lydia Pence – I thought she’d be the next Janis). Yeah, you might remember Vanilla Fudge but Cold Blood? (Okay, Kat go look it up.))
12:00 Emily and Noah and Mia – Emily is the daughter of brother Rob. She worked on the first season of The Voice and the reason we started watching and saw Kat in season 4.
12:18 Al and Stacy – Al teaches Shelby and I yoga (socoyo.com) via Zoom now. And he will teach you! (Stacey’s kind of desperate to have him out of her hair.) Stacy and Al went to our house in Maine and shot their vid from on top of Cadillac Mountain. Stacy is a professional photographer and took new pics of our house which are fabulous, and will be appearing soon on the house’s website. (Barharborviewcottage.com) Have lens will travel!
12:39 Penny – Penny and Sami were my neighbors in Bannockburn and there are many stories of vacations and hanging out with them and their two children (now all growed up!) Nura and Ramzy.
12:45 – Marty and Margaret – We knew Marty and Margaret from the Cray Research softball team.
13:05 Donna and Ron – Friends of Shelby’s best friend, Wendy.
13:29 Mary Kate & Max – Archaeology buds. They are expecting about the same time Katie is.
13:42 Kat Robichaud – Kat was a competitor on season four of The Voice, which we started watching during season one because Emily Kinnaird was working on the show. Kat was from Raleigh and we were living in Chapel Hill. We went to her show at the Lincoln Theater, sat right behind her mom. You could tell the people that watched the Voice and the people who were Kat’s friends. There was a twenty, no thirty, year age gap. Then there’s RiffRaff. “What’s Riffraff doing here?” I wondered. (Okay it was someone dressed up like Riffraff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.) We hadn’t gotten the memo. Kat moved to San Fran where she puts on The Misfit Cabaret (or was. Now she’s doing albums on-line and stuff like that.) www.katrobishaud.com
I sent a note to Kat once about hearing SteppenWolf at the Avalon. (Ya know like in the opening song of Big Brother and the Holding Company’s ‘Combination of the Two’ where they sing “Everyone over at the Avalon Ballroom”? Big Brother? Janis Joplin? Okay. Whew. Now we’re talking.)
She knew SteppenWolf but the Avalon? Not so much. She had to look it up in the Way Back Machine. (See MiAnn above)
Kat, you should hear Ruth play “Little Wing.” And Ruth you should hear Kat sing “Mercedes Benz.” Maybe Zoom together with Lance.
14:15 Shelby closing it out.
I want to tell you all how lucky I am.
Several years ago I was trying to talk Shelby into going on a trip to the jungles of Central America to see Mayan ruins. She said, “You go and talk to your friends about how they moved those rocks. I don’t care*.”
*How they moved the rocks. Ie “I don’t care how they moved the rocks.”
Wow, that was life changing. Shelby is’t a big fan of heights. When I got to the top of my first Mayan pyramid and looked over the edge for the staircase (you have to get right to the edge before you see it.) I thought to myself, “Thank God, Shelby isn’t here.” This would definitely be a ‘not fun’ situation for her.
I on the other hand can only watch so much of The British Baking Show. I mean it’s nice and all, but how often do I need to see those two cut into a gorgeous cake, take one bite and say, “It’s a bit dry” ?
So we’ve compromised on a trip to Provence to cook with Patricia and a cruise up the Rhine.
I know there are a lot of folks who Shelby wasn’t able to contact, but she only had so much time to sneak into my office.
Thank you one and all.
Rick Kinnaird
