Day 539 Thursday July 12, 2018 1,039 Days to Go
Last night I went out on the deck and looked at the stars. Our house overlooks The Western Bay of the Atlantic Ocean behind Mount Desert Island and Bar Harbor, Maine. There were no bright lights anywhere in view. The usual bright aura from Bar Harbor was tamped down. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. Overhead was the Milky Way. I haven’t seen it so clearly in all my life. I have seen pictures of it as drawn in the 1700s where they showed it as a band of cloud like consistency. Maybe, as a child I saw it that way, but I don’t remember the cloud like faint lumpy shapes. It was quiet. It was dark. It was there in all its quiet glory.
They like to say things are different in Maine. I guess they’re right. It is different. They also say, “The way life should be.” I think they’re right again.
I called the lobster pound last week. We’ve been going there for forty years. I gave them my name and told the woman that I was bringing the four grand children of my mother to pick up the lobsters. When we got there she looked up and nearly cried.
Life is different up here.
