Okay, enough about Black Lives Matter and the Pandemic and Trump – at least for this post. Let me address another on-going never ending stupidity.
Guns.
I watched Bill Maher’s latest show. He was going on about guns and that he has one. The reason he has a gun is in case someone breaks into his house he can defend himself. He had Killer Mike on. Killer Mike, every white liberal’s rapper. Killer Mike has guns. He has one when he goes to the store, by his bed, his wife has one, just in case. Okay fine. The reasoning being that if someone invades your home or tries to attack you in public you can defend yourself. Great.
This ignores the statistics, but so what? What statistics? Oh the ones that point out that homes with guns have more deaths by guns than homes without guns. Suicide, accidental shootings: I know, won’t happen in your home because you know what you are doing. That seems to be what every gun owner says when one of his kids is shot dead by the another one of his children. The typical home invader that seems to get shot is a family member not a person you don’t know.
How about outside of the home? Funny thing, states that have enacted stand you ground laws have more shootings since they enacted those laws. Some have stood their ground over a parking space being taken by someone else, or someone trying to take the space.
Another fact, countries that don’t allow their citizens to have guns have far fewer people dying from gunshot wounds. I know. What about standing up to tyranny? Okay, let’s look at that. I’ve seen lots of video and pictures of mainly white males walking around McDonalds and the like with an AR-15 slung across their bodies than I have read about someone defending their home, person, car, or parking space with said weapon. I wonder what would happen if these men decided to stand in a line in front of the unidentified Federal cops in DC? What about if they had been in Lafayette Square when Barr unleashed the cops with the flash grenades and tear gas to set up the one block perimeter around the White House? (Remember, it was just a coincidence that the president wanted to walk over for a photo op.)
Another argument is that it’s too late to disarm those who shouldn’t have guns because there are too many guns out there. I have a simple solution. It’s called sex and money. I’m betting one or the other could clean out most of the unnecessary guns.
I also like the idea of banning assault weapons. You can keep them if you like but if your weapon is used in a crime you go to prison for life – no parole. I know. It’s no deterrent. Let’s try it.
As far as people wanting to keep guns in their homes – fine. As long as they pass basic certification on use and safety. Oh, and mental fitness. And their spouse agrees, because it is the spouse who is most likely to get shot, so I think they should have a say.
Second Amendment? Yeah, read it.
I’m tired of some idiot claiming he or she has a right to walk around with a loaded gun. I have a right to not get shot, and an expectation that I won’t. Sorry. Don’t try.
It’s time to stop being stupid about guns. Fewer guns – fewer deaths by guns.
