Election Day -14
63 Days until the Inauguration on January 20, 2021

It’s been two weeks and Satan has handed off his legal complaints to Rudy. Yeah, good idea. I saw Rudy babbling on about conspiracies, the Ukraine, bad ballots, etc. Meanwhile the cyber guys in our government say that this election was one of the cleanest we’ve had. This does not sit well with the Orange One who has fired the deputy of that agency and is believe to be gunning for the top guy. I mean if the man doing the job, does his job and it does not comport with your fantasy … ? Never mind.
Cy Vance, the New York State prosecutor, has won another round to see The Donald’s tax returns. Just in time for a new Justice Department to take over. And – get this – The New York State Attorney General has already announced that she is going after Satan the minute he is no longer president. That would be 12:01 pm Jan 20th. I’m trying to picture how that will work. As Donnie gives his Nixon wave at the helicopter does someone run up and hand him some papers. “You’ve been served!”
Why, that could be a new reality TV show. Kind of a take on the old British comedy “Are You Being Served?”
Maybe we get Jessie Ventura dressed up in a tux sitting in a wing chair as the Alistair Cooke announcer. “Yo, in this episode of You’ve Been Served we hunt down Eric and Don Jr. and give them papers to appear in court. We also follow up on last week’s episode where Jared and Ivanka are cuffed and attached to a lamp post while agents search their home and cars. The children and nannies watch and scream and cry…”
Ah me. There are some worries I have. 68,000 votes in four states could have given the election to Satan. That’s absurd given that five million more people voted for Biden. We also have forty senators that represent the same number of people as one county in California.
I don’t know if we can ever rebalance the country’s electoral system to more fairly represent us.
Some of my right wing friends are busy posting stuff about the country being on the brink of destruction, and how the Dems won’t let Donnie save the country, and how we should live our lives and not worry about the virus. Okay. I’ll buy that. Some seventy million people voted for Satan, a quarter million are dead from the virus. Let me do some quick math here ( 70,000,000 – 250,000 = 69,750,000 ) Wow, we’ve got a ways to go.
Dave Chappelle said in his SNL monologue that one thing the pandemic has done is to put mass shootings on hold. That was until last week, someone managed to get enough people together to kill them to qualify.
The question isn’t whether he will go, he will. The problem is that he has shown how fragile our democracy is. The question is what can be done to strengthen it? I have written about the Greek mercenaries who had to fight their way out of Persia. They showed it could be done. A generation later Alexander, emboldened by this knowledge, invaded, defeated and destroyed that empire. Constantinople, which had stood against the invaders from Asia for centuries fell, because no one thought it would. The Roman Republic gave way to the Roman Empire for much the same reason. Germany was a democracy in 1920 by 1924 it was gone.
We can pine about, “Nothing is Forever.” Or we can as Dylan Thomas wrote, “Rail Against the Night.” We can stand up, be counted, and keep our republic (thanks Ben Franklin.)
The fight is not over. It is not beginning. It has been going on for a long long time.
Do not sleep or like The Invasion of the Body Snatchers, they will own you.
In other news, there seem to be vaccines on the way, and sometime next year, if all goes well, they will start to be deployed.
This morning I got up early. It was still dark. I dressed warmly to go out on the back deck to look for shooting stars. I was immediately rewarded with a nice big one that dropped straight down toward the horizon. I stood out there awhile and looked. I could see from Orion and Sirius to the Big Dipper with Triangulatum and Taurus and Auriga in between. I looked at Betelgeuse, the red giant at the top of Orion. I could barely see the sword. When I was up in Maine I could see the sword clearly and with binoculars I could see the binary star combination of the first of three “stars” in the sword. I remember when Mr. Perkin first showed me that in the late 1960s when my dad was working for Perkin Elmer with NASA shooting lasers at the moon for the first time in an attempt to measure the distance to the moon. He was using Mr. Perkin’s personal telescope at Mr. Perkin’s observatory in the backyard of his New Canaan home.
Mr. Perkin showed my brother and me Saturn. You could see the rings plain as day. And the first star of the Sword of Orion (not the Belt) you could see both stars. It was eye-opening and it was the only time I got to be in Mr. Perkin’s presence. I was able to understand his charm, his appeal, his ability to influence and inspire others.
We need more of that today.
