Day 907 Tuesday July 2, 2019

489 Days until the 2020 election and 567 days until the Inauguration

The End of Civilization as We Know It

Eclipse

The above sentence was the last line of a Mad Magazine take off on The Daily News, which they called The Daily Dirt. The Daily News was (and is?) a New York City sensationalist newspaper reporting things like alien abductions and starlet’s bare skin. In the Mad Magazine take off there was a brief article on the front page at the bottom of one column that noted that Russia and the U.S. had started a nuclear was and that this was “the end of civilization” (article continued at the top of the next column for one line) “as we know it.”

A buddy of mine who was on one of my tours to the Mayan area in Guatemala told me his grandparents grew up in Germany when Hitler was coming to power, He said, “They knew he was crazy, but when they decided to do something it was too late.”

The Ed Sullivan Show* had a comic on who said he was a school teacher in NYC. One of the things he bemoaned was how “Kids today, you can’t …” Can’t mark them wrong for an answer like this to the question, “Why did the Roman Empire fall?” Answer “The Roman Empire fell because of carelessness.”

*The Ed Sullivan Show was a variety show. Mr. Sullivan introduced America to all sorts of comics, jugglers, musical acts, and vaudevillians. His show followed Walt Disney’s “Wonderful World of Color” on Sunday nights. To get on Ed Sullivan was to signal you had made it. The Beatles were introduced to America via Ed Sullivan, as was Elvis Presley a generation before. Although Mr. Presley hip gyrations were considered very salacious and stirred much consternation in conservative religious parts of the country. Jimi Hendrix did not play on Ed Sullivan as he was considered too whatever to do so.

I am here to tell you that the end of the American way of life is at hand unless we do something.

Call me what you want, but the evidence is there. You may want to pooh pooh it, but do so at your own and my peril. Once it is gone we will not get it back. We will be relegated to the dustbin of history, and this proud experiment will have come to an end.

You may think I’m being overly dramatic. I have a tendency to be so. But, consider the evidence. (I know – facts, so passé. )

Since 1980 the middle class has not made any economic progress, while the rich have become richer.

The middle class has been asked to pay more, make less, and has gone in debt more. It is now to the point that a large number of Americans live at or below the poverty line, struggling til the next paycheck, working two and three jobs, and going ever deeper in debt.

Meanwhile the gap between rich and the rest is growing. The gap between the rich and the super-rich is also growing. Statistics and phrases like “three people in the United States own more that the bottom 30%” are common comparisons.

What happened? What is happening? What can we do?

I’m not sure of the answer to the third question, unfortunately, but I can outline some of the root causes of the first two.

First and foremost we have allowed ourselves to be lulled into a stupor by idiotic and fearful ideas: be they economic, religious, social, or political. These ideas have been pushed by various people and groups with in some cases hidden agendas, in others they are straight up in your face wacky, but they are believed!

Take for instance Ran and Ron Paul. They push an economic idea that came out of Austria. It has at its core the idea that you can turn an economy around by diddling with various rates. What do most Nobel prize winning mainstream economists say to this? Bull shit. But they persist and they have enough catchy little phrases and quips that people like that they hang around.

Or if you want another example take Reagan’s “Trickle down economics.” Well, it’s been 39 years since he started saying that how’s it working out for you? This has been debunked so many ways… It’s basically an excuse to enrich the rich. It’s worked pretty good for them but how many pool boys, yachts, and lawn technicians do they need? (In the case of Betsy De Vos I think the yacht count is five. Not enough to really restart the economy.)

Or what about the Trump tax cut? The effect of that was to deplete the treasury, put the nation in more debt at the rate of $1,000,000,000,000.00 per year and enrich the rich. This was magically supposed to trickle down to the rest of us but it didn’t. Companies were going to reinvest in America, but they didn’t. They bought back their stock, and like the bank bailout, they gave themselves huge bonuses without helping those that really needed the help.

Let’s move on to how religious quacks have inserted themselves into the political process and sowed seeds to undo our democracy. Where to start?

How about that pastor who, like many fundamentalists want to bring about the apocalypse and part of that requires moving the capital of Israel to Jerusalem, which Trump has done. So what if it pisses off a bunch of folks living there? When Jesus descends to lift us all up …

Or what about the pastors who prey (not pray, prey) upon the innocent telling them to send money to them instead of spending it on medicine to fight the cancer the people have that is destroying their bodies?

Or what about Jerry Fallwell Jr.? It turns out that the son of the man who started Liberty University, a rather strange place full of “Christian values” and wacky ideas that generates a lot of money for the Fallwell family, seems to have supported Trump for president over Ted Cruz (who kicked off his bid at Liberty and is the son of a pastor), not because he deeply believed in Trump’s values but because he was being and is still being blackmailed. It has to do with a pool boy in Miami, some photos Michael Cohen had (and claims to still have one), questionable business loans, jets, money, sex … you know … the usual.

Then there are the folks who believe it is their duty to force other people to do things with their bodies that they don’t want to do, that can lead them to death, a living hell, poverty and a miserable existence. They call themselves pro-life, but once again that’s crap, because forcing a woman into an unwanted pregnancy and making her bring it to term results in many women dying from unsafe abortions and/or bringing a child into the world that they don’t want and will force them into a life of economic disadvantage. There is evidence to suggest that the downturn in crime in the early 1990s was the result to the legalization of abortions in 1973. That is to say that there weren’t as many unwanted children roaming America in the early 90s when they would have come of age and hence lower crime rates. (This has been disputed but all the chest thumping Rudy Guliani’s and chiefs of police have never offered a better provable explanation.)

Let’s move onto the social and political spheres.

In the book “Democracy in Chains” by Barb MacClean the review in google starts with this sentence, “An explosive expose of the right’s relentless campaign to eliminate unions, suppress voting, privatize public education, and change the Constitution.” This has been an ongoing campaign funded by the Koch brothers and their allies for decades and we are watching it play out in real time before our very eyes. Betsy DeVos is Secretary of Education. She had never been to a public school as a student, teacher or administrator. She has carried out a failed charter school effort in Detroit. She has been working relentlessly to siphon money away from public schools and into charter schools, notably Christian charter schools. She is doing whatever she can to weaken public education in this country. Plus, she’s not very bright.

The right has hidden their motives behind patriotic slogans and economic “freedom” messaging, but in private correspondence they reveal their true motives. There is a belief and many regular folks are adopting this attitude that: taxation is theft (or socialism and that’s bad), and under the guise of “freedom” it’s “every man for himself” or “I got mine you get yours.” The attitude is pervasive now. What is always striking about these folks is the way they harken back to “the way it used to be”, “ the good old days” etc. What they conveniently forget is that some of the things they attribute their success to are the very things they are dead set against now. Either that or they forget that the good old days weren’t that good. Take for instance clean air. In the 1970s major cities’ skylines were obscured by a haze of smog. Now, many want to do away with the EPA. Rivers had so much sludge in them that they caught on fire. Now, we’re letting coal companies push their waste into the rivers we cleaned up.

The rich who are orchestrating this are incensed at the idea of paying taxes, especially property taxes. They see it as stealing. Howls of socialism are rampant. They like to forget that capitalism unchecked is just as dangerous as other economic ideas when taken to an extreme. Well, maybe they know, but don’t care.

Now, the Trump Administration led by a man who knows little and has no interest in learning, is attacking scientists who are trying to let people know basic facts about the condition of the Earth. In the Department of Agriculture he is trying to dismantle many of the scientific agencies that led the world in basic research about our food, and water. In two weeks they will all be fired (or have to move to Kansas where there isn’t even a building for them to work in.) Yup, don’t want to know stuff that might make him look bad.

We used to be the nation that solved problems. Now we are leading the world in stupidity and ignorance.

I don’t know what to do other than to point out what is happening.

Let’s not be like my buddy’s Prussian grandparents who saw it coming but acted too late.

Day 906 Monday July 1, 2019

490 Days until the 2020 election and 568 days until the Inauguration

Why do art museums have such crappy websites?

I know, you’re asking why am I bringing this up now? We are in such a target rich environment for things to talk about why art museums’ websites and their inherent crappiness?

Well, let’s dispel with everything else first and then move on to the museums. Our president went to a meeting of world leaders where he embarrassed himself and our country in multiple displays of ignorance, stupidity, and thuggery. Ho hum. It’s what we’ve come to expect.

Speaking of “what we’ve come to expect”  the 16th woman has come out and accused the president of the 22nd time of sexual assault. (Or is it just 22 and 16 is an old number?) The accusation made a brief blip on the news cycles, but didn’t warrant front page coverage in any major newspaper because – you know – it’s what we’ve come to expect. This time it was rape. I mean if Mike Tyson can be put away for “digital insertion” (that was the charge) certainly a white man can get something for penile insertion? Maybe not.

Okay so this leads right into today’s topic of art museums crappy websites. Look I’m a patron. Not a big time patron, but I give money, I go to shows, I love museums. My love affair with art started when as a nascent freshman preparing to go to Johns Hopkins I had to pick courses for my first semester and I couldn’t decide what to take for a fifth course my first semester. I called down to the university and I still remember whomever I talked to saying, “Take History of Art, you’ll like it,” and I did! Dr. Phoebe Staton was the lecturer. She was great. She cared. She was enthusiastic, not overly so, just enough so you understood her passion. I remember talking to my contemporaries who went to other colleges and took history of art and said it was dry and boring. Not Dr. Stanton, from that time forward I have always veered toward art museums. I typically go alone, because I like to take my time and I typically take longer than most to take in whatever I am looking at.

This interest in art has led me to many places to look at art and to participate, if nominally, in the art scene. I have done a large aerial sculpture in Sheeps Meadow, Central Park, and in the Netherlands. I have been to Burning Man where I reported on the art that was there. I have spent much of my adult life flying kites and participating in that world as an announcer, auctioneer, organizer, flier, and maker. I have gone to art museums around the world.

Art museums are like cars. They are in many ways all the same, yet they have their little differences. However, when it comes to their websites they seem to share a similarity of dysfunction. They look nice when you first look at them, but when you try and use them to order tickets or buy something or sign up for something then you discover that you must be willing to suffer for your art. I don’t think I’ve ever managed – in general – to go to an art museum website and find what I wanted and do what I wanted to do in the first try. I’ve come to realize that you have to make multiple runs at the beast. You have to be willing to try again. You have to go back and find that email that invited you to something in order to get to that part of the website, or you have to abandon your cart and go through ordering all over again (or they might just empty the cart for you.) It’s not easy dealing with art museum web sites.

In my latest attempt I tried to order four tickets for their special exhibit called “Awake” on “Member Mondays” at The Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA) and to make reservations for dinner at their rooftop restaurant “Amuse.” Okay, how hard should that be? (Answer – Moderately hard, only three attempts and one abandoned shopping cart and four separate wanderings around the website – not bad. I managed to get tickets, but not dinner reservations.  I’ll give it a score of 7 out of 10 for difficulty.)

Case Study (ie the details): Okay VMFA sends members (me) email notices saying they have “Member Mondays,” which means you can go to the museum on Monday evenings. Actually, anyone could go but they make it sound special, which it is in that if you need tickets to a special exhibit only members can get tickets for those times. So today we, my wife and I, are planning to go to the “Awake!” show with two friends. I went on line to reserve tickets. I logged in as a member and was surprised to only be able to get two tickets. Okay, I got them. Then I went to make reservations at the cafe as the Member Monday email had suggested I might want to do.

Here’s where art, meets graphic art, meets web design, meets advertising, meets human factors, meets industrial psychology. The VMFA website has a lot of information on it, lots of tabs and stuff. In fact, all the art museum websites have a similar look and feel because they all have the same kind of constituent base, or bases. Or maybe it’s because someone went around with a cookie cutter template and sold the same design? I dunno, but I can tell you this. If you don’t know the secret pathway and do it just so you are screwed. (“You are in a maze of twisty passages all different” etc.*)

*Old Unix joke. One of the first games on UNIX was adventure in which you entered a verb and a word to move about a cave to pick up treasures (“Get bird”. “drop rod” etc.) as you moved about you would get one line clues as to where you were two of the most famous clues were: “You are in a maze of twisty passages all different” and “You are in a maze of twisty passages all the same” No, there was no stinkin’ graphic interface. This was a character based terminal. Geez.)

I went to the tab for the cafe, the Amuse Restaurant, and tried to make a reservation for dinner. Well, first I had to realize that the tab marked “Dinner” only showed you the menu for dinner. There was a lot of stuff on the page with the dinner tab. Too much stuff, any ad exec or web designer will tell you to reduce the clutter and keep some blank space.

(A web designer and graphic artist I know has told me they have to constantly tell clients that reducing a full page ad to a 1/4 page ads means you have to get rid of 75% of what you had in the full page ad. “But it’s important!” Yeah, well you ever go to a little league game? You do? Good, let me ask you how many of the signs tacked up on the outfield wall can you read and what do those signs that you can read have in common? Big letters? Imagine that? And not much else, wow. I think you’ve got it Sparky. Yeah, the rest of them have a lot of little type but you can’t read it – too small, too much. Yeah, I know. What? You still want me to reduce your full page to a quarter size? Okay, I’m sorry. I gotta go, Here why don’t you sign up with Go Daddy? Yeah and then in six months you can come back and ask me to redo your whole site because it’s so slow it doesn’t work. Yeah, I know. Sorry, let’s just end it right now. Yeah, bullet to the head and be done with it. You’ve got an eight year old nephew that can do it? Great. Go for it. No, I won’t be available in six months when you come back and say they can’t quite do everything you want. That’s like thinking you can take six guitar lessons and think you can play like Carlos Santana “Know what I’m saying?” What your website is slow? It’s only six pages. Odd. Hey, your cookie cutter easy to get started template opens 4,000 files. Yeah? So why is it slow? Gee, I don’t know. Why don’t you ask your nephew? Oh, he says he’s not interested anymore. Gee, that’s too bad. You want me to fix it? Okay. Oh and you want me to do it for next to nothing because you gave all your money to your cousin and now you don’t have anymore? I see. Hey. I’ll call you back later. Okay? When? I’m not sure. Yeah. Good luck.)

So I finally find “Reservations” and Reservations for Amuse Cafe. Great. Turns out the latest reservation they have is 2:30 for lunch. I don’t want lunch. I want dinner. Click on Dinner – get the menu again. Click on the info page about the Cafe and the days they list for dinner don’t include Mondays.

Question: If you send me something as a member about what’s happening for a Monday, why are you including a suggestion that I make a reservation at a restaurant that isn’t open on a Monday?

Okay back to the VMFA website. I went back to my email program and found a “Member Monday!” email. I clicked on a link in the email and now I was able to order four tickets, not the two as I was only allowed (as a member) to do before. Great!

Hey, maybe if I go via the Member Monday email I can make a reservation at the restaurant?

I clicked the suggested link. Bam, back to making reservations for lunch.

So why is it that this is so hard to do? In other words why is this website so crappy? Okay, if your an art museum staff or director type person you’re probably going to say, “Look, we have a lot of programs and groups to satisfy…” I get that. But then there was the time I was signing up for a drawing class. It was called “Introduction to Drawing.” They referenced a page where you could look up the materials needed for the class. The materials needed for classes page didn’t have an “Introduction to Drawing” class. They had a “Basic Drawing” class. Was that the same thing? Who knows? I had to call in, no answer, Then email, delayed half a week for an answer.

I was a member of the MOMA (The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City) for a year. I joined and went up to go to the Picasso sculpture show. The shop would send me email announcements for a FLASH SALE! I’d respond to the email only to be told the sale was over. Wait what? I just opened the email this morning and you sent it yesterday. Oh? It was only for one day. You sent it out at 11am and by 5pm it was over. Got it. Are you trying to piss me off, or is that just the way you operate? Oh, I see. You too. (Now, VMFA is copying them. Great.)

Then there was the fun of trying to order something from the MOMA shop and trying to get my member discount. Many abandoned carts later, and several phone calls I’d get the, “Oh sorry, we aren’t part of MOMA. We’re the shop. If your number doesn’t work you have to talk to membership. By the time you talk to membership the sale is over, but that’s okay because it turns out that you don’t get member discounts on sale items. Hey, couldn’t you have told me that in the first place? Oh, I see. I didn’t ask that question. My fault – obviously.

So then there’s “Monsters and Myths” a show about Surrealism and how the artists of the time were reflecting the disintegration and chaos of the society of which they were a part. 60 Minutes did a piece on it last night. Apparently, the show had been at the Baltimore Museum of Art and was moving to Nashville. Darn it, I’d like to see that show. Baltimore isn’t too far away, but Nashville? Ten – eleven hours by car, 19 hours and $150 by train, 5.5 hours and $451 by plane – further than I want to go. Even knowing the name of the exhibit and knowing it was going to be in Nashville wasn’t enough to find it with a Google search. The museum in Nashville I thought was called the Frisk, turned out it’s the Frist. Once I got the museum name and went to their page, which looks like all the other museum pages I found the exhibit. Call me crazy but the first thing I want to know is the dates it’s going to be at the museum. But museums seem to like to hide that. You gotta really want to know, to dig down and then there it is. Whew.

Okay, done bitchin’ about museums. It seems that the problem, like so many things is, to be good at something you’ve got to care (and know what you are doing.) Hey, it looks good. Who cares if it really works?

In other news, our president thinks “liberal democracy” means the people of San Francisco. His ignorance and disinterest in learning is not only staggering but appalling (or is it the other way around? Appalling and staggering??? Hard to say.)

Kate Mckinnon was on Seth Meyers the other night and gave a wonderful impression of Marianne Williamson – look it up.

Iran has stepped over the line on the amount of uranium it has produced. Good job, Johnnie Bolton and The Donald! One commentator pointed out that this is a “deal” not a “treaty.” So anything can be negotiated.

Samantha Bee’s show, Full Frontal, gave a great historical rundown of the gang MS 13. Turns out it was created by the U.S. government’s ineptitude toward El Salvador. Then our government fortified and trained the kids by sending them to our prisons where they learned more criminal skills and then we shipped 40,000 of them back to El Salvador to terrorize that country. Great job guys.

Day 905 Sunday June 30, 2019

491 Days until the 2020 election and 569 days until the Inauguration

Megan Rapino and Obstruction of Justice

Ah yes, Megan Rapino, the co-captain of the Untied States soccer team. The woman who said, “I’m not going to the fucking White House.”

Well this seems to have folks on the right incensed. Imagine that? She should resign from the team! She won’t put her hand on her heart during the playing of the National Anthem! The outrage. The discourtesy! How could one be so disloyal. How indeed?

I have a problem too. It’s not with Ms Rapino, but with others.

Let me summarize from volume II of the Mueller Report of the evidence of Obstruction of Justice.

There are multiple times when the president or his associates obstructed justice.

This is breaking the law as opposed to what some see as Ms Rapino’s disrespect for the country.

So I have a problem with people in office, and in this case high office, who break the law.

Well, wait a second you say, he says he didn’t break the law and that there is no evidence that he did.

To which I say Bull Shit.

There are at least ten cases in the Mueller Report that clearly show Trump and his cronies met every legal requirement under the United States Code of Obstruction of Justice.

The specific law is known as 18 U.S.C. 152(c). Mueller hones in on subsection (2) of 18 U.S.C. 152(c) but here’s all of section 18 U.S.C. 152(c):

(c) Whoever corruptly—

(1) alters, destroys, mutilates, or conceals a record, document, or other object, or attempts to do so, with the intent to impair the object’s integrity or availability for use in an official proceeding; or

(2) otherwise obstructs, influences, or impedes any official proceeding, or attempts to do so,

shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both.

You can google it for yourself.

Under this law anyone who obstructs an investigation, regardless of whether a crime has been committed is guilty (a la Martha Stewart). Or in the case of Micheal Cohen, there was a crime committed. A crime he was directed to do by the president. For which he is serving time in prison.

Mueller lists with all the evidence needed to satisfy every part of 18 U.S.C. 152(c)(2) of at least ten cases of Obstruction of Justice.

Here’s a quick run down of two of them:

1. Trump made repeated efforts to have McGahn as White House Counsel fire the Special Counsel. He, Trump, then lied that he had done so. There is no question that this happened.

2. Trump repeatedly tried to have the investigation into Flynn’s conduct stopped and then signaled to Flynn’s lawyers and Flynn that he should consider changing his testimony. This is witness tampering. Again, there is no question that this went on.

2 (2nd part) Manafort and Gates were indicted on federal crimes. Trump’s personal lawyers told them they “were going to be taken care of.” This is witness tampering and obstruction of justice. Again, there is no question as to whether this happened.

(BTW since the Mueller Report was issued it has now come to light that Sean Hannity of Fox News, who enjoys a close personal relationship with the president, had been in constant contact with Manafort. We know that Hannity speaks almost daily with Trump. You think this wasn’t discussed? )

2 (3rd part) Harm to an ongoing matter (redacted).

Okay so let me stop here with the possible Obstruction of Justice claims against a sitting president of the United States and let us compare this to Ms Rapino’s behavior. OMG. How can these people be so upset at a soccer player for expressing herself when the man in charge of our country has committed these crimes?

Meanwhile, in other news the president met with his boss and handler, Vladimir Putin. They had a secret meeting where I’m sure Vlad told his puppy what to do next. They had a photo-op where our president joked about “fake news.” Putin said they have it too. Except in Russia they imprison and kill them – ha ha pretty funny.

Meanwhile, Jared is playing diplomat and sidling up to MBS the man who had a Washington Post reporter dismembered.

492 Days until the 2020 election and 570 days until the Inauguration

Of Gerrymandering, Willie Horton, and Roe v Wade

It’s hard to know where to begin with the Supreme Court’s decision to allow political gerrymandering.

I started by reading the decision. I haven’t read a Supreme Court decision since the DC gun law, which was a strange majority opinion written by Scalia and an excellent dissenting opinion. If you want to understand the history of how the second amendment came to be read the dissenting opinion in that case. If you want to read some legal argle-bargle read Scalia’s majority opinion. I remember getting to the end of Scalia’s piece that finishes with “It is so ordered.” I had to ask myself, “What is so ordered?” I had no idea. I went back and reread parts. I couldn’t figure it out. What had he ordered?

The other weird thing about that opinion was that Scalia started his decision by arguing with the dissenting opinion, rather than making his case. Weird, very weird.

The gerrymandering case (Rucho et al. v. Common Cause et al.) looks at two gerrymandered states: one by Republicans (North Carolina) and one by Democrats (Maryland). The majority opinion says basically that there is no judicial basis for them to rule on a politically proportioned state district. Racial yes, political no. They go on to say things like just because the majority of people are of one party doesn’t mean that is the way they will vote in local races, even if they did statewide. Basically, they are saying they don’t want to be involved and it’s too hard to figure out and they don’t want to be referees in every squabble that comes up over districting.

The dissenting opinion asks the fundamental question, “Isn’t this about the basis of our democracy? About one man – one vote and the like?”

I’ve got to wonder what will happen when (and if, but given the make up of the court and think it’s “when”) a test case of Roe v Wade comes before the court will the conservative justices who said they didn’t want to be involved have a similar opinion when it comes to playing god? Will they say, “Hey, we con’t want to get involved with deciding when life begins” ?

As far as the gerrymandering issue goes, maybe this is like the porn cases of a few decades ago, “You know it when you see it.” In fact in the North Carolina case it was so extreme that it’s hard to fathom the reasoning that the justices weren’t sure what was going on. They had written evidence from the people who did the gerrymandering that this is exactly what they were trying to do. Leaving it to a state to undo that has purposely twisted itself in this knot is hard to understand how they think this will undo itself. Like many of the ultra-conservative viewpoints it depends on miracles and magic.

Now we get to Willie Horton. Remember him? He was the guy who was in prison and released under some Massachusetts program while Mike Dukakis was governor. Horton went on a rape and murder spree. Lee Atwater, the Republican dirty trickster of the day, decided to run ads tying Horton to Dukakis and this helped George Bush win the White House. (Please don’t try to tell me what a great decent guy Papa Bush was. Remember he was one of the messengers for Dick Nixon during Watergate. And oh yeah, later in life he thought it okay to grab young women by the ass. Like our current president. Whoops sorry, he grabs them by the pussy.)

Fox News went crazy when those Democratic candidates raised their hands saying they would support a public option on health care. This will be the Willie Horton attempt by the Republican dirty tricksters this time around. “Socialism!” “They want to take away your health care!” Blah blah blah.

The choice is obvious: Do you want to be guaranteed health care at a savings of 40-50% or do you want to keep paying what you are and having to pay deductibles and fight for coverage? Maybe, some want the coverage they have. Great. Most people on the stage said they wanted to let folks have a choice. Some said there should be no choice because it was a no brainer.

Regardless, you know what the battle cry will be.

Most interesting to me in the analysis the next day was a comment Joy Reid made. She said that when you look at Biden and you look at Harris what you are looking at is the choice between nostalgia and change.

I think that’s correct. Joe has a lot of experience and has done a lot. Is it time for him to step aside and let a younger generation take over? That is what Eric Swalwell asked Biden to do. When I listen to Ms Ocasio-Cortez that is what I hear: change, not nostalgia. Not the old rhetoric and chants of “Socialism” or whatever distraction fear mongering statement the right wingers are trying to push.

I think it is time for Joe to step aside. I fear that if he gains the White House, he will be like Papa Bush. Once he gets there he won’t really know what to do. He will be hamstrung by all those years of making deals and back slapping.

I want someone unencumbered, unafraid. with vision and who has thought out issues and has policy and programs already in mind.

Day 903

Day 903 Friday June 28, 2019

493 Days until the 2020 election and 571 days until the Inauguration

Megan Rapino visits the White House (a dream).

I have a dream.

I dream that Megan Rapino, co-captain of the Women’s USA Soccer Team visits the White House, along with the rest of her teammates. I dream that when the official photo is to be taken the women gather around the president. That they place their hands on his body and that they rub up against him, and as the photographer gets ready to take the official photo Megan whispers to the president, “You know, you’re not my type.” As she does this she grabs his crotch and squeezes and twists. Simultaneously, two other players give the Donald’s nipples twisties. (That’s where you grab the nipple pinch as hard as you can and twist.) At the same time several other players grab his underwear and hank up on it giving him a super wedgie as other players grab his belt and rip downwards – depantsing him.

Imagine the live action stop photos!

Donald smiling,

Donald making that O-face of pain,

Donald bending over,

Donald being pulled up as the wedgie lifts him back up and his head tilts back in surprise,

Donald standing in his tidy whites and pants around his knees.

I think the women should then yank his pants back up so he’d be standing there with his shirt half way out, his tie disheveled and hair askew.

Megan could say something to him like, “Hey, welcome to the team. You’ve been initiated. Great job!”

Or maybe, “I always thought you were a fucking pussy.”

Okay. That’s my dream.

And I dream that some day, every group that comes to the White House will show the president the respect he deserves by acting in a similar fashion.

Now on to the Democratic Debate. Wow. What a difference to the Republican Debates of 2016. Here candidates addressed issues people were interested in, problems we face, and potential solutions. The first night the attack ads began. There was one of those “What’s he hiding?” scary ads in gray, black and white with yellow overtones. But the best part of the debates were that the candidates on the stage were talking about problems we face as a nation, as a people, as the world and how to deal with them.

My favorite part was when Elizabeth Warren was asked if she had a plan to deal with Mitch McConnell if he was still head of the Senate in 2020.

“Yes.” She stopped there for five seconds or so. I wish she had just stopped. Or waited until the moderators asked her what it was, but still it was great.

Some of the candidates were one note. Some were spouting pat high level answers. Some had really thought about how to solve the problem they were talking about.

I kept thinking about how that compared to the Republican debate when the Fox folks asked the candidates what women they would want to see on a U.S. $20 bill. Some said their wife, or their mother. One said Margaret Thatcher. Wow, how friggin’ stupid. (No living person can be on U.S. currency, nor can a foreign individual be on our currency. Oh well, those are just rules. We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.)*

*Just to spell it out for those who might not follow the logic here. Because Margaret Thatcher is British she could not be pictured on our currency. If a person’s wife or mother is alive they could no be pictured on our currency. So maybe the only possibility would be someone’s mother who died. Great thinking there you all.

Universal health care, protecting our children from gun violence, naming the biggest threat to national security – these were the topics and issues being discussed by the Democratic candidates for President.

I don’t know about you, but somehow this seemed more germane to what we need to be discussing as a nation than whose mother should be on a twenty dollar bill.

Have a nice day!

Remember – Today is the first day of the rest of your life.

Thank-you, the management.

PS Rocket Man

Stella of helmeted individual
Rocket Man

This is known as the El Baúl Ballgame Stella. There is a copy of it on the outside side wall at the National Archaeology Museum in Guatemala City, which typically you see as you are leaving the museum. To see the original you have to go to southern Guatemala where you pull up to a twenty foot high gate with an armed guard. You pass by a several rusting large building that are the remains of a sugar cane processing plant. Under a series of open roofed areas there are many sculptures. Some have thorny branches on top of them. Along one of these open corridors is this stella. No one knows much about it’s meaning or origin that I know of. However, this has not stopped the speculation that this is evidence of ancient aliens coming to visit us. I was told that most of these sculptures were discovered when plowing the area for sugar cane fields. Also, in this area of Guatemala are large rounded rocks with faces carved in them.

After speculating as to the meaning of the thorny sticks atop some of the sculpted heads (religious or spiritual interpretation perhaps?) we asked.

The answer? “Naw, we just put the thorny branches up there to keep the birds off of them.” So much for deep spirituality. I wish we could ask someone about the helmeted rocket man.
