I listened to an interview with Mark Ronson who did the musical score for Barbie. What an interesting guy. He’s produced some big hits, including Bruno Mars “Uptown Funk” and Amy Winehouse “Back to Black.” However, the Barbie musical score was a departure for him. He and the director asked various artists to contribute. Among them was Billie Eilish, who with her brother composed and sang a song that they sent to Mark and director Greta Gerwig. Mark immediately called Greta and said, “Damn, how can they be this good and so young?” I don’t remember the song from the movie but it is perfect. so perfect in fact that Ronson wove it, he says, throughout the movie.

Ronson also spoke about his first album he produced. It was a rap song that sampled two other people’s work. When he asked if they were okay with it, one said they wanted 100% of the royalties and the other 25%. He had to go back to the artists and tell them they were at -25% in royalties.

This is not unlike Jeff Koons whom I saw an interview with on 60 Minutes. His famed blue balloon dog sculpture cost him more in materials than he sold it for ($1.6m?). I’ve always found Koons’ work – well, problematic. However, this interview changed my opinion. Jeff employs workers around the world to create his art. He often doesn’t touch the final product. He’s the vision guy. In his interview with Anderson Cooper he asked Anderson – how many interviews would you be able to do if you had to do the lights, the cameras, the audio, all of it? Anderson said if he had to do the lights the number would be zero. 

However, I got Jeff’s point. It’s a principle that an old kiteflying friend told me once, Do the parts you like and are good at and find others to do the rest. I also realized that having an artistic workshop (an atelier) is an old artistic tradition. Many of the Renaissance artists had workshops and folks to do the detail work. Rodin certainly did and Kehinde Wiley does now. Does it matter if he didn’t paint every flower in the background of one of his paintings? 

It’s an interesting question. Especially, when you come to writing. Is James Patterson really writing every word in his books? Does it matter? In the case of well known authors who pump out lots of books and do so “in association with” I find that those books aren’t as good as the first original books when the author was struggling to get one out the door. Then there are people like Nora Roberts who seem to write and write and write then stop and say it’s a book. I can’t figure her out. Was there a story line? I guess. Kind of. WTF?

What are we going to say when AI starts writing books? Will they be any good? I doubt it. But, I’m sure it’s coming, or is it here?

We watched Coco win her semi-final. She’s on the road to becoming America’s sweetheart. She’s 19. She’s cute, and she plays a good game of tennis. I prefer to watch women’s tennis because it can be over sooner. Men’s tennis goes on too long. It seems the way most tennis matches are won is by errors committed, or not committed. bong … bong … boring.

And now we get to Fani’s letter to Jim Jordan. Jim Jordan is a bully. He uses his position to beat up on people and like William Buckley he accused people of doing the very thing he is doing, and they are not. He will brow beat someone endlessly and try to force them to admit something that is basically not true. If the person gives in and answers “Yes” to some twisted logic question he then turns around and hits them over the head with it endlessly. 

Bear in mind that Jordan has never done the job to which he was elected. That is to be a legislator. That means working on and passing legislation. Something he has never done. So why is he in Congress? Power. He likes the power of the office and to be able to push his nutty ideas.

His committee to investigate the weaponization of politics and the investigative services is an example of this. He sent a letter to Alvin Bragg about his investigation into Donald Trump. He got a to the point reply and explanation. Not that Jordan cared or read it. He tried it with Fani. Oh boy, did he get a reply!

It’s a seven page letter that starts off kindly enough – you don’t understand the law or the constitutions of the United States or Georgia. Nor do you understand RICO both federal and Georgia. She suggests he can buy a book that explains all this to him. Price $249.00. She then tells him that if he wants to do something that is within his purview and could actually be helpful he could look into the attacks made against her and her office and jurors. She give him ten examples.

Fani don’t play. You want to? Come on.

Now you might ask, “Why is a county DA having to do this?” or “Why is a black woman having to explain this to a white man?”

The answer is “because the white men shirked their responsibilities to do it.”

They had multiple opportunities. They have them now. Every time they turned a blind eye, prevaricated, pretended not to notice or straight up lied.

And as to Jordan’s snide comment about “why bring it now?” She said that if certain people had complied with her requests instead of fighting them all the way to the Supreme Court like Lindsey Graham did, she could have brought the case earlier.

Moving on.

I was made aware of a fact I had failed to notice before last night. Every Trump defendant and every Trump case has lost in court. (Okay of the 62 cases about election fraud 60 straight up lost and 2 wrangled off with technicalities – but certainly not wins on the merits.)

The latest in the list of losers is Peter Navarro who like Steve Bannon had railed against a Congressional subpoena and ended up being found guilty of ignoring it and not showing up. How unfair! The Constitution! We’ll appeal! Question – did you show up? Answer – No. Result – Guilty.

Or as Fani explained to Jim Jordan – You need to face reality. If you commit crime in Fulton County you will be charged with the crime and tried in Fulton County and no, your buddies don’t get special treatment.

I think I’ll contact Mr. Jordan’s office and see if he’s gotten hold of the Rico book and – here’s a big one – has  he started reading it? Oh sorry, are we on to Hunter?

Then there is the bullying and destroying of norms that the Republicans say they hold so dear. If they hold them so dear, why are they trampling on them? (Answers in a second.) There’s Tennessee where after expelling two black legislators for speaking up when told they couldn’t talk they got re-elected and once again the Republican Speaker of the House in Tennessee is f*cking with them and telling them he will not afford them the basic privileges he let’s his Republican white legislators have.

In Wisconsin a woman was elected to that state’s Supreme Court by eleven thousand of votes. It wasn’t close. She’s a Democrat and this would break the conservative stranglehold the conservatives have had on the court. Giving sanity a 4-3 advantage. The Republican legislature has come up with a novel way to prevent this. Impeach her! And while impeached, she can’t rule until she goes to trial and her trial is over. So they are never going to hold the trial! So clever. The court will stay deadlocked at 3-3. Therefore Wisconsin can stay gerrymandered and the Republican legislature can keep it’s super majority.

This is where we are at in this country.

And if Ron DeSantis is so proud, as he claims, of the anti-abortion measure he signed why did he do it in the middle of the night behind locked doors and kept others out? Just asking.

The fig output is slowing to 1 1/2 pounds yesterday. Thank goodness, as there is little room left in the freezer. (or as the old joke punch line goes the Indian named “Bowels No Move” reports to his doctor who has been giving him diuretics that he gotta move because the teepee full of shit.)

We watched “How to Live to 100” a four part series on Amazon by the guy who wrote The Blue Zone book.

Blue Zones are places where there are high concentrations of 100 year old people.

He went to four different places and interviewed people and communities to see what was different.

He came away with the idea that you can change people’s life outcomes by changing their environment. By:

• Making it easier to walk and exercise.

• Decreasing unhealthy foods and increasing the incentive to eat better.

    (Singapore told the soda companies only 12% sugar max.)

• Forging a sense of community.

    ( I thought how lucky I was to live in community where I raised my kids that had a co-op nursery, a Spring Show (that mixed the generations), a Community Center (for parties and get togethers) , and a swimming pool (with a swim team))

And a the Proud Boy leader got off easy at 22 years. I thought of The Son of Sam killer whose defense was a dog told him to kill. That defense didn’t work and I’m guessing the defense of “Trump (or The President) told me to do it” (or suggested I do it) won’t work either.

Peter Navarro is trying to claim executive privilege for not showing up to a subpoena. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that he had executive privilege. Maybe Trump thought it? Let’s drill into his brain to find out? Ah Petey ya could have gone to Washington and said nothing, but no – you da man. Idiot.

It seems a lot of lame excuses are about to fall for many. So sorry (not sorry). It’s a long time coming but it’s coming.

In other news – Taylor Swift reportedly makes thirteen million per Eras Tour performance and she has broken all kinds of opening day sales for her movie. Go Tay Tay!

Olivia Rodrigo says her new song “Vampire” is not about Taylor. I like that she won’t say who it is about. Adding intrigue to the “You’re So Vain” genre of songs.

Gary Wright of “Dream Weaver” fame died the on the 4th. I looked up Gary Glitter by accident. Man, some people never learn.

I have crossed the 75 pound line in terms of the fig harvest. We are out of freezer room. I’ll have to start making jam. By offering figs to people I’ve found out who loves and who does not. … Love figs. What did you think I was talking about?

Oh. Burning Man? No. Yes, it was not what lots of people expected this year, but the weather there is what it is and you have to learn to adapt or you can get relly screwed up. If it rains the dry lakebed makes a gooey cement like mud. Pedal your bike one revolution and you have your tires and wheels coated in it for four to six inches of the stuff, which will dry and be like cement. People who know I’ve been have to Burning Man sent me updates and news articles – all appreciated. However, let me say this – if you haven’t been, whatever you assume is probably not the reality of the experience if you should go. The festival is marketed “as a festival of radical self-expressionism.” I have been in discussion with people who say, “oh it’s people wandering around nude, taking drugs and having sex.” Hum, says more about the speaker than what happens. In fact, I asked a person proferring that line when he he had been. He said he never had. I told him I had been twice, and while there were people walking around with little or no clothing and there were others taking drugs like ecstasy that what I found was amazing art and huge dance parties and some wicked funny “camps” like “Talk to God” and “Disgruntled Postmen.” Didn’t make a dent. As soon as I stopped telling him my experience he went right back to nude, sex, and drugs. The difference for me now as opposed to when I was telling him is that I am no longer surprised by this behavior.

BTW If you are into art and the art of today go to Burning Man. If you like the art of yesterday (which I do) go to a museum.

Okay. I know. The Sex Raft. You want to know about it? Well, I was looking up something on the Maya and a side clickbait thing said, “The Sex Raft.” You know that it’s bad when the article starts with “this guy was a really bad scientist.” Then repeats it every other sentence for the first part of the story. So, here goes. 1973 this “scientist” had an idea that if people were left in a small group in isolation and faced some very challenging and terrifying events they would revert to their basic instincts, get violent, and have sex. So he created this large metal raft (40 or 60 feet by 20 or 40 feet and six or eight feet deep) put a rudder on it and a sail, got about a dozen people to sign up to float across the Atlantic. The women outnumbered the men by a few and the women had the jobs of captain, diver (if any work needed to be done on the raft’s underside) and navigator. This scientist guy would sit in a corner and observe. Once a week he’d give them all a questionnaire. He’d ask very personal questions like “who do you hate the most?” and “who do you want to have sex with?”

The people were all young, in their twenties. They got along. They got bored. Some had sex, more out of boredom than anything else. They didn’t have feelings of violence toward each other, despite this guy trying to start something. As the trip progressed the answer to the question, “Whom do you hate the most?” turned out to be the scientist.

They had two events that were crisis inducing. One was the rudder failed and instead of letting the woman who knew the scuba equipment and was fitted for it the scientist insisted that he go fix the rudder. He failed. The next morning the diver lady went over the side and fixed the rudder, which really pissed off the scientist. After that he kind  retreated into his shell.

That is, until they had a real crisis, a freighter was bearing down on them. If they couldn’t get the freighter’s attention they would be run over, sink and die. The scientist ran around ineffectively. He had replaced the captain lady with himself, but she took over gave orders. They got on the radio, sent up a flare, climbed the mast to get the freighter’s attention. They succeeded. The freighter diverted. 

By now the scientist was sitting in the corner sulking and then got sick, or claimed to be, so someone had to pay attention to him. As they neared shore the other crew members shared deep personal stories and became friends for life.

Did I tell you he was a really bad scientist?

I sat out on the deck early this morning. There are dead leaves on parts of them on the deck. The fig harvest is slowing down, (thank goodness) and the leaves look like they are ready to turn. Maybe more because they look like they aren’t getting enough water, which does’t make sense, but that’s the way they look.

College football started and I’ve lost Shelby to GameDay. She’ll be back after The National Championship or the Super Bowl. Right now we are in the “this might be the year – no it’s not” phase. From what I saw this won’t be the year. It will be an okay to good year for Virginia Tech but not a great year.

Surprising to many was Deion Sanders at Colorado where his son is now the QB. Many didn’t think his team would do well against TCU. Colorado won by three points. There were some really really good plays. Young Sanders showed poise and precision. It might be the year for them to do very well. Consider that Deion came to Colorado, interviewed the existing players and got rid of most of them, then built a team from the portal. Like him or hate him, Deion Sanders is exciting and gets things moving. Now they call him Coach Prime, not Deion.

Okay, that’s it. I thought a little distraction before we get to the ever tightening net. Imagine if Republicans had done the right thing from the start? Who am I kidding? It’s not that Trump has a huge lead over everyone else in the field, it’s that the rest of the field is boring, placid, and in most cases crazy (or completely out of touch.) But this is nothing new for the Republican party. They have played this two tiered game for decades. Ever since Eisenhower, who was the last Republican President who actually tried to do something to help people and not the rich, the corporate, and the powerful. Since then it’s been a parade of sleazy or stupid. 

Nixon was sleazy, but he did try to appear to do things to help people and he did. He also screwed them. He signed a medical bill that ripped control from the hands of the AMA,(ie doctors) and gave it to his businessman buddy. This led to medicine business being controlled by people looking for profit not good health of their clientele. Eventually, it led to Rick Scott taking over many hospitals in Florida and pleading over seventy times the fifth in one of the biggest cases of Medicare fraud. He got away with it, ran for Governor and won, where he began a systematic dismantling of anything that could help the poor and the middle class. He went on to be their Senator and has continued the assault on the common man in the halls of Congress.

Then we got the Gipper and his Aw Shucks I’m just a great nice guy. He destroyed the unions, let the crazies out of medical institutions, ran up the debt, fueled the anti-abortion movement and this led to the slow decline of the middle class, which had been doing pretty well since the end of World War II.

He was followed by his VP – Papa Bush, who had a great resume but no vision and like Ron DeSantis no ability to communicate with people. He was mildly awkward. The best description of him came from a historian who said once H. W. Bush got to the White House and didn’t know what he wanted to do. His lack of common touch was summed up by his being amazed by a bar code scanner at a grocery store. Apparently, he hadn’t been in a grocery store in twenty years.

His son ran and lost to Gore. However, due to dirty tricks from Roger Stone and the lets play fair of his staff he lost in the Supreme Court. This ushered in the goofy stupidity of W. He tried. I’ll give him that. He just wasn’t that smart and thought being a nice guy to have a beer with was enough. It wasn’t and we saw more unraveling of the social and economic network that had been forged by FDR and the post war boom go by the wayside. The best description of both Bushes was supplied to me by an old friend who said, “Remember Texas under Ann Richards?” She was the last Democratic governor of Texas and the mother of Cecile who was the President of Planned Parenthood. Texas was doing okay. They had their struggles, but they were getting things done. In came the Bushes and the Republicans and they cut taxes, and then services. This affected the poor and the middle class. It ran up their debt. Now the state is in dire circumstances and continues to be.

Now we have these show politicians who don’t have an interest in reality and spend all their time railing against windmills. They end up getting bitten by their own conspiracy theories. some have learned to keep the foe an amorphous thing like Antifa, or woke. But others don’t and that can hurt them. Like the election commission to oversee the 2020 election. When all was said and done the commission said there was no fraud, except for, what?, five cases of Republicans in Pennsylvania?

Now we have Mike Huckabee’s daughter passing terrible hurtful legislation as Governor of Arkansas and the Republican Presidential hopefuls all wanting to ban abortions. Has anyone asked them what business is it of theirs what a woman does? 

What I see is a generation or two that have gotten their etiquette from the Simpsons and are being led by the nose of the hidden forces of wealth and power in this country and more and more the wealthy form an international elite.

In soon to be breaking news the head of the Proud Boys is due to be sentenced today. The prosecution wants 33 years. Others have gotten 20. We’ll see.

Okay. Two Things:

There are headlines saying Trump took in $7.1 Million after his mug shot was released.

People believe that? Look, has the orange one ever told the truth? Case closed. It could be higher or lower, I don’t know, but I doubt if he said it that it is true. Well, maybe someone on the staff said it and didn’t consult him, then it might be true.

My question is why weren’t we ready with a big merch response to drain money from his fervent supporters? Call it something innocuous like “The Campaign to Again Make America Great,” or something like that. (AMAG – not bad.)

What I was wondering was why haven’t we seen Pez dispensers with the heads of Donald and Rudy on them? “Each time you pop the top a small replica of the voter box like the ones used in Georgia is dispensed. Suck on That!”

Or why haven’t we seen bobble head dolls of all the co-conspirators?

They could be put in a three tier rack so you can bang the edge and all the heads start to wiggle.

“Mix and Match. Put the most guilty on the top row or the middle, you decide.”

You could have two sets: the before the mug shot bobble head and the mug shot one.

Speaking of stupid, John Eastman went on Fox News and admitted to a crime. I’m not a lawyer, but if you are under indictment for a crime, I don’t think it’s a good idea to go on TV and admit to that crime. Just sayin’

Oh, BTW, the fig report for August was off. It was actually 66 pounds, not 56. There was a second page to be added to the calculation. Now with the eight pounds from September, so far, we are at 74 pounds. Far exceeding my prediction of 60 pounds. 

I keep looking at Trump and wondering if we are going to see the buzz cut video when he goes to jail.

And Rudy has been told to pay up. He says he’s broke. But hey. So far the judge in the election worker case has told Rudy to pay $90K in legal fees that the other side has racked up. The judge got tired of Rudy playing games with the court proceedings and said enough. Pay up. We are still waiting for the damages part. Poor Rudy, “Would you like a ginger mint?” Dispensed from your bobble-head likeness? BTW I’m thinking of some great other merch item – a USB drive that looks like a ginger mint. And a ginger mint that looks like a USB drive. Clever huh? Maybe, one of each kind in a likeness of Rudy.

What we are all trying to figure out is “What happened?” To Rudy.

I heard a great little piece on Mark Meadows. It said that Trump has always managed to find people who are willing to be compliant. There ya go. We need a bobblehead for Mark that also bends at the knee – either to genuflect or ..

Fani has said she wants to give all the co-conspirators a speedy trial. Donald says his team needs more time. I think the defense’s reason to the court is, “We read slow.” (And grammar ain’t 2 gud either.”)

Speaking of Fani, Jimmy gee-whiz Jordan is off on another fishing trip wanting to know what her communication with Jack Smith has been. I’ll tell you what I think. In fact, I’ll show ya Jimmy all the communication she has had. Here ya go:

What? You didn’t see any? Yeah, right. She has no reason to communicate with him. You putz.

She might have to communicate with Jack so they arrange court dates that don’t overlap. Maybe, not. why not have Trump in court at two different locations and then find him in contempt for the courtroom he didn’t show up in?

Is it too late to name Jordan as part of the conspiracy?

Hey, guess what? A Democrat has introduced legislation to specifically exempt people held in captivity by a foreign government to not be charged penalties for not paying their taxes to the IRS. Apparently, this is based on a real case. A person was in jail for two years in Iran or somewhere, finally gets out, and comes home to thousands of dollars in fines for not paying their taxes. This is like Putin claiming his political opponent was in jail because he didn’t check in with the Russian authorities while unconscious in Germany while seeking treatment for the poison Putin had given him.

Oh and I heard a little bit of economic news – another positive jobs report. One reporter even posited the question, “Is it safe to say there is no coming recession?” OMG! What? In the face of overwhelming positive economic news the big money guys aren’t making their nut and want to warn about dire things to come if they don’t get their way.

In other economic news – Taylor Swift announced a movie of her ERAS Tour that will come out October 13th. Boy did that piss off the movie execs. See, she went to the distribution folks, ie the middle men, and asked them to distribute it. They said sure but not before next year or the year after. See we know what is best for us. So old Taylor’s family negotiated directly with the movie houses. Did it quietly and then announced. The execs decided to move the date of the release of “The Exorcist” to another time. Bummer. They wanted Friday the 13th? Get it?

Why do we need a redo of The Exorcist? I mean wasn’t one head twisting, green vomiting movie enough?

Did you see the overhead shot of Tay Tay’s Mexico City concert? Wow.

Speaking of drones – Ukraine has two new ones on the battlefield. One is made out of cardboard, making it hard for radar to detect. They’ve been blowing up Russian stuff in Crimea with them. And they’ve got a bigger drone that can do even more damage. I think, the U.S. is now sending missiles to Ukraine called “ATTACK ‘EMS” (okay that’s not how the military guys spell it, but that’s what I hear when they say it.) These missiles have a longer range and can start knocking out stuff deeper in Russian territory.

Jimmy Buffett died. What a guy. One song made him a billionaire. Pretty cool. BTW Cheeseburgers in Paradise exists. I’ve been there. It’s in a corner of a palm covered courtyard. Rastafarian guys with their afros in knitted red, yellow, green hats ask you, “You want salad on that man?” That means: lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise. After placing your order you go to another counter and get a beer. You’re in the islands so nothing is cheap. Twenty years ago when I was there (Yikes maybe 30!?) a beer was $4.50 or $5 for a Heineken. The burgers were like $7.50 or eight bucks. That was a lot, but boy did it taste good.

If you’re going to waste away it’s not a bad place to do it. Better than where Rudy and Donnie might be going.

Or waste away in Z-What (Zihuatanejo) in Mexico, where I watched John Elway and the Broncos in a play-off game. Sand between my toes, cold beer in hand, big TV, palm covered open air bar. Yeah.

Or the Kona coast of Hawaii’s big island. Second floor bar, open air, reading “The Curse of Lono” and watching two very fluffy young girls trying to rent tiny motor bikes, which all but disappeared below their exuberant overflowing flesh. Then they’d give the bikes a little bit of gas. It would jump forward and they’d put their feet out while delightfully screaming, “I can’t drive!” The skinny little guy renting the bikes ran behind each one of them trying to cajole them to learn enough to drive the things off his grass strip. He didn’t have any other customers – poor bastard.

• The backlit item to my left in the photo, your right, is a Naga. It’s a five or seven headed stone statue that guards the Temple of Banteay Srei. We were there in 2015 just as the sun rose. We wanted to beat the many tourist coaches that would be there later. when I returned just after Covid the parking lot was empty at ten in the morning.

 A week or so ago a 13 year old girl in Mississippi was forced to bring a child into the world.

Not to be out done – The AG of Alabama is trying to make a Rico case out of any Alabama resident leaving the state to seek health care that they can’t get in that state. Classy.

New job numbers are out and they are better than expected. 

Joe Biden went to the belly of the deep state beast yesterday. He visited FEMA workers and thanked them for what they do. Especially, what they are doing in regards to Hurricane Idalia, which ravaged parts of Florida that hasn’t seen such weather in over 100 years. The hurricane was so bad that Ron DeSantis actually returned to the state to get in front of microphones and pretend to do his job as governor. 

Ron also got booed earlier in the week for showing up at a media briefing about the three people shot and killed by a racist. Ron said that such actions have no place in Florida. But banning books, rewriting history, and saying slaves learned useful skills as slaves (courtesy of a right wing blowhard who pretends to be a university) is okay. I wonder if he wonders why he got booed?

The Republicans had a forum where the presidential contenders got to raise their hands to support Trump if he were the nominee even if convicted. The amount of nonsense was beyond silly. None of them are electable – I hope. I mean some got praised for a few moments of sanity they showed when not spouting nonsense. 

BTW – did you know that heart cells can beat? And they can do so outside the body? So the “heartbeat” you can hear inside a mother’s womb is not a heart when it is first heard. Oh sorry. Facts. Gee, I wonder if someone were to clean up a biology experiment of beating heart cells would the AG of Mississippi or Alabama bring murder charges?

Mitch McConnell stood in front of a bunch of microphones and couldn’t talk. A young woman beside him asked, “Senator, did you hear the question?” Maybe, he did. Maybe, he didn’t. He looked out of it. Probably a mini-stroke. He was led away after faintly, finally, making a few remarks. He was slightly bent over and seemed to have little idea where he was.

Joe Biden has managed to get ten drugs cleared for price negotiation for Medicare. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee are crying socialism. How is allowing an entity to negotiate prices socialism? I thought that the essence of capitalism? Ten drugs this year, fifteen next year, and the next. Why the slow roll out? Come on you know the answer – Republican obstructionism. That and the influence of big pharma lobbyists who out number politicians in Washington 3 to 1.

Tommy Tuberville continues to block military promotions. I’m sure Mitch will waddle up to him and try to convince him. Why is it we have to convince him? He’s not going to change unless a gun is put to his head. Now, there’s an idea.

Biden is also trying to close the gun show loophole – a favorite issue of John McCain. Maybe, it will get through this time?
