Day 917 Thursday July 11, 2019

480 Days until the 2020 election and 562 days until the Inauguration

And we are still talking about Jeffery Epstein. Well, it’s moved on more to Alex Acosta the now Secretary of Labor but former Federal Prosecutor who gave Epstein a sweetheart deal. Ignore the 53 page indictment that his office came up with, lie and conceal the deal from the victims in violation of the law, and yesterday give a babbling incoherent press conference in the Labor Department press room as to why he did what he did.

I see a movie here. It’s got to have Nicholas Cage as the desperate against all odds anti-hero seeker of truth fighting the Luminatti secret council that runs the world behind the scenes. When one of the Luminatti’s own get in trouble they get bailed out by another brother. They have a secret greeting and there’s a shiny object. Got to have a shiny object. Not sure what it does, but that’s not important. Old Nick is on the case. First, he’s told to forget it. There is no case. But there is! He fights on. Then he’s told that the forces against him are too powerful, he’ll never win, But he fights on! Then we see the council meeting. They’re seated with dark peeked hoods in chairs that look like they came out of a cathedral. You can see their gnarled hands. Some have on big silver rings with insignias on them. In the flickering flames their faces are half lit. They discuss the danger posed by Nick and how he must be stopped or the truth will be revealed! They can’t have that. (Is that Wayne La Pierre? I think so. He’s cow towing to the grand master emperor.)

Sorry, where was I? Oh yes. Listen. If you get in trouble with the law, the guy you want as a prosecutor is Alex Acosta. Trust me on this. Broke the law? Multiple counts against you? Going to the pokey for the rest of your life? Hey, no sweat. AA to the rescue. Yes, you’ll have to plead guilty to littering or going 67 in a 65, but not rape, murder or grand theft, Okay?

Then we have a virtual who’s who of legal talent working for Epstein. They are on record as “negotiating” with Acosta. Thanking him for concealing the deal they’ve struck from the victims, in violation of the law. WTF? WTF?

Ken Starr, that prig who went after Clinton over and over again. Boy, I can’t wait to hear his rationale. He was part of the legal team defending Epstein. Acosta’s explanation as to why Epstein got the deal he did was a beaut:

1. It’s a complicated case (So I’d rather not attempt it.)

2. It’s the state’s fault (Except the guy at the state level immediately trashed Acosta after Acosta’s press conference saying Acosta was completely wrong.)

3. It was a long time ago. Times were different. (Yeah, I mean 12 years is like sooooo far back in time, who can remember?)

4. It’s Obama’s fault. (Ha ha, I made that up. That will be the Freedom Caucus, Trump, and Alex Jones’ reasoning.)

Epstein has in his little black phone (book?) fifteen different numbers for Trump. I can’t wait to hear old Donald say, “Epstein? I hardly know him.”

Let’s remember that Jerry Fallwell Jr. backed Trump because they had pictures of him in some sort of sexually questionable (offensive?) acts ( I don’t know, it’s not clear what they have, but whatever it is it was enough for the so so religious son of a preacher man to throw it all out the window and support a serial sex offender.)

So we’ve got Fallweel Jr., Alan Dershowitz, Ken Starr, a bunch of other high profile lawyers, and many others who are somehow all connected to Trump. They commit crimes and they get away with them. Let’s not forget Manafort and Gates and the money laundering, taking bribes (I mean lobbying for oligarchs), illegal political contributions from foreigners, etc. etc. And then there’s Mitch McConnell who is loath to do anything except pack our courts with folks who will let these criminals off the hook in some sort of twisted logic. And then there is  the panoply of grifters, lobbyists, corporate “tycoons”, and influencers who make up the Trump administration. I mean somehow a lot of this is tied together in some unseen ways. This isn’t a really dark conspiracy. Nothing Trump does is that deep. I think it’s more a case of they’re having pictures or video of these folks doing illegal, or socially questionable to their supporters, sex acts.

I don’t know how much we will learn, or how much will eventually come out. However, it seems pretty clear to me that there is more; that there is something underlying and tying together a lot of this stuff that we haven’t heard about yet. It is due to the reporting of journalists that we are hearing about that which is coming out now. Otherwise, the various legal departments would not have done anything.

Oh yeah, there’s an interview with a young lady who says Jeff Epstein raped her. He started having her massage him when she was fourteen, while he masterbated, but he waited to hold her down and rape her until she turned fifteen. What a guy. She’s not part of any of the indictments or charges currently filed. Hum, NBC broke the story. Fake news!

Look for Donald to shrug, say he doesn’t know, and “we’ll have to wait and see.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. Women’s World Champion Soccer Team had a ticker tape parade in their honor. Proceeds from this tour will go to fund the men’s soccer. Nice. Some things never seem to change.

Day 915 Tuesday July 9, 2019

482 Days until the 2020 election and 560 days until the Inauguration

Well well well, Jeff Epstein may get charged with more sex crimes and his plea deal may get vacated.

I mean why should that happen?

Oh, I dunno. Alan Dershowitz, who seems to be deeply wrapped up in this, (like maybe he participated?) has been busy ruining his reputation for months (years) by going on Fox and saying stupid things in defense of Epstein. Yes, he’s one of his defense lawyers but still.

Then there is that paragon of investigator oversight Ken Starr, who is also on the defense team.

And there are those emails between them and Jim Arcosta saying they would withhold telling the victims that they had reached an agreement, which is illegal, but hey. Ken was upset about Clinton getting six blow jobs, I wonder how upset he will be with the over 80 victims that have come forward so far saying Epstien paid them for sex, hauled them across state and international lines to perform said sex acts and that they were as young as 13? Look for some idiot on the Christian conservative  movement to say something like it’s okay cause god said so, or Jesus and follow it up with a women are cows statement.

What does Trump say? Oh gosh, he really doesn’t know anything. It’s the old shrug and innocence game once he’s nailed to the wall.

Moving on. Fox News reported live from a bar in Paris after the women’s soccer team won the championship. The crowd started chanting, “Fuck Trump,” and the Fox folks cut away. Wonder why? (ps Donnie was pissed with Fox. Aw,)

Day 914 Monday July 8, 2019

483 Days until the 2020 election and 561 days until the Inauguration

“I read the news today, oh boy…”

Actually, I just read the headlines and skimmed a few articles. Big day for the Donald and the Republicans.
I suggest they stretch their index finger and thumb to form an “L” shape and put it up by their foreheads.
“L” is for “Loser.” I think it would make a great children’s book. Actually, it would make a great tome for Trump to read. He’s got that great brain, maybe he can choke down a 16 page book with no word over four letters and that has big pictures on most of it. Oh wait, “Loser” is five letters. Nevermind. Too hard.
Well, let’s start with yesterday. R-A-P-I-N-O-E betcha Donald can’t spell that name, or wouldn’t want to. She led the U.S. Women’s Soccer Team to a world cup victory. Scoring in the final, and winning ever award they could give here. And, she ain’t going to the fucking White House. Some have suggested Obama invite the team over for a cookout.
But wait, it gets better.
Jefferey Epstein got indicted on multiple charges of child abuse.
Elliott Broidy is under investigation for slimy business dealings while heading up the GOP fundraising.
Conservatives are pissed at Chief Justice Roberts for following the Constitution in the Census Question case and want him impeached.
The 5th Circuit Court in New Orleans is hearing a case about the ACA and whether it’s Constitutional. This will bring up all those wonderful efforts by Republicans to throw millions of people off health care just before the 2020 elections. You bet they are excited to be remind voters of those efforts.
Trump’s pick for the head of the Navy is retiring after his judgement is being questioned. So much for picking the best people.
Deutsche Bank is restructuring, laying off a mere 18,000. Something about they no longer want to be in the equities loan business. Boy, they are going to great lengths to hide the fact that they loaned Donald money.

So that’s it. The funniest thing I read was Matt Schlapp, the conservative news channels call on when they want someone to sound sane when advocating insane ideas, has called for Roberts impeachment because Mattey boy claims Roberts isn’t following the Constitution when it comes to the Census question. Apparently. Schlapp does not read the Constitution, nor does he know history, or he wouldn’t say something so ignorant but then we’ve come to expect ignorance and stupidity, not to mention cruelty and lying, when it comes to these fine political savants.
Let’s review some of the more recent things our president has said and done:
He wrote “The Prince of Whales”,
He thinks “Liberal Western Democracy” means Democrats living in San Francisco,
He’s for busing. I mean how else are you going to get kids to school?

What were those statements and elocution of logic made? In the last week?
It was over a month ago that he passed the 10,000 lie mark.

Day 913 Sunday July 7, 2019

484 Days until the 2020 election and 562 days until the Inauguration

What if the American Experiment in Democracy is Over?

I pose this question quite seriously.

What if the American Experiment in western liberal Democracy is Over?

Let us look at the evidence that may suggest that it has already happened, that it is over and all that is going on now is the pounding of the last few nails in the coffin?

There is the world as we wish it to be and there is the world as it is. Joseph Campbell wrote that civilization is founded on myth, on some sort of belief system. What if the belief system has changed that underpins our civilization?
I’m not sure we are there yet, but … I dunno.

I’m going to scrap together various bits of evidence, evidence of something, and then ask the question posed to Mr. Natural*, “What does it all mean?”
*Mr. Natural is a graphic comic character created by R. Crumb. Mr. Natural has a long beard and sports an ankle length hair shirt and is bald. He seems to get annoyed when people ask him what it means and typically responded, “It don’t mean shit.” (In case you were wondering.)
Or the answer given in “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” which is “42.”
Are we at a point where we will look back at all these bits and say, “Why didn’t we see this coming?”
There are those Eureka moments in people’s lives when they’ve been looking at all the pieces and trying to make sense of it, when all of a sudden it all falls into place. Two of my favorites are Watson and Crick asking “What if the valence of one of the atoms is not what we’ve been told?” and it wasn’t and then the whole DNA molecule fell in place. The other is the separating of the UNIX fork and exec system calls into those two now well known calls instead of making it a single call. The merits of which were immediately understood after it was done but not before. (Obviously, this doesn’t have to be explained further because everyone knows the story.)

One of the things I’m good at doing is taking in diverse inputs and stitching them together in some sort of semblance of order. It’s taken we a long time to realize that there are things that I see that seem obvious to me, but aren’t at all obvious to others.

When dealing with a problem, especially behavior problems, it is hard to know what to do, at first. Sometimes you have to let the problem or condition sit in your lap for awhile. You need to pick it up and examine it, put it down and think about it. This process may go on for a long time. Eventually, one hopes to reach a conclusion, a new understanding, and perhaps see things in a different way.

Recently, a friend of mine from elementary school has asked me some questions about the current political, social, and economic situation. She has very extreme conservative views, However, her questions and reply comments seem to be thoughtful and genuine. It has caused me to state my beliefs without malice or ad hominem. That has been an interesting exercise and it continues.
Another friend of mine whom I worked with a Fannie Mae has sent me an article by Robert Reich that looks at the difference between China and the U.S. economically for the last forty some odd years.
Thirdly, are my own comments and observations on the state of our country: the political and social landscape; the economic conditions of people, companies, the government; the mythos that has bound us together as a nation.

What if I put all those threads together? Where are we? What if the conservative hopes and dreams are realized? What happens to the country that we have known? What if China becomes the dominant economy in the world? What if the influence of the Chinese becomes such that nations side with China and not the U.S.?

Here are some data points:
The U.S. has been going into debt more and more. This is recognized as unsustainable.
The U.S. has invested in wars. China has invested in projects around the world that have increased it’s economic influence.
In 1978 China was an agrarian society, they have transformed themselves into an economic powerhouse, lifting million out of poverty. Since 1980 the middle class in the United States has not had a raise, has seen their economic opportunity decline, and they have gone further in debt. Many have slide into poverty. The Chinese have been growing at 9% a year. The U.S. has only seen growth in the rich and corporations.
Corporations, many of which were founded in the U.S., have moved their headquarters to mailboxes in tax-free islands or similar principalities. Corporations have also moved operations to places that allow them to pay the lowest possible wages. Corporations in the U.S. and the west in general, have as a objective to increase shareholder value. The other unspoken thing is that CEOs do whatever they can to increase stock price because much of their pay is tied to that price. That and their ability to get paid astronomical salaries. The disparity between a CEO and an entry level employee has grown wider and wider over the last four decades.
In China, as Reich points out, the purpose of corporations is different. The purpose is to increase the influence of China Maybe, I’m not stating that well, but it’s not to increase shareholder value or pay their CEOs an ungodly amount. I’d say it’s more about expanding their influence in whatever area they are pursuing. Is the economy controlled in China? Yes. What does that mean? It seems that this means government officials visit your company and ask what your numbers are going to be for the quarter. Then they ask that you either increase them a bit or push some of the sales/profit into the next, because the objective of these officials is to keep the growth of their area and hence the country as a whole in a consistent growth pattern. How is this different from a western company where the boss asks his sales team to push out a sale to the next quarter?
However, the fundamental difference is Chinese companies owe loyalty to China, while western companies have no such overall objective. Well, theoretically companies in the west serve at the pleasure of the political entity in which they are operating, but the reality is that big international corporations move to wherever the conditions are best. This means lowest taxes, cheapest labor, etc.
There is a myth that by helping companies they will help the economy and in turn help everyone, but this is not true, as President Obama learned after bailing out the banks from the mess left to him by his predecessor. (ie the banks didn’t loan money to the average person and thus didn’t really help stem the tide of the problem they created. True, they saved themselves – and pocketed a bunch of money in the process. But actually help the average person? Forget it. Just like they didn’t help after the stock market crash of ’29; they tightened credit in ’32, which led to the Great Depression. They blamed it on the stock market, but that isn’t really true.

The agenda of the rich and powerful (be they individuals or corporations) is moving along nicely and it is leaving everyone else out.

If this doesn’t change we as a society, as this great experiment in democracy is finished.

486 Days until the 2020 election and 564 days until the Inauguration

A Conversation with God and the Young Buck

I was down in the man cave the other day when the Young Buck came by. As per usual he was looking into his little phone and nearly tripped over the door sill.
“Are you looking moon faced at your girl friend?” I asked.
“What?” was his response, which is about the only word he knows.
I didn’t say anything for five seconds and he went back to vacantly staring at his phone.
“You know they’re giving away twenty dollar bills on the corner,” I said.
“What?”
“Yeah, first come, first serve, with pizza.”
“You have pizza?”
“No.”
“Oh.”
He was back looking at his screen.
“So the other day God stopped by he was humming ‘ Don’t Rain on My Parade.’ “
“You talked to God?” For some reason this got his temporary attention.
“I didn’t say that. I said he stopped by.”
“God was here?”
“Yeah, sitting in that over stuffed armchair next to you having a beer.”
“God drinks beer?”
“Are you listening? Yes, he likes a Hefeweizen. Nothing too heavy. He gets so much heaviness in his life.”
“You talked to God?”
“Are we back on that again? I said he stopped by. For a beer.”
“He drinks beer?”
“Oh God, here we go again.”
The Young Buck was staring in that dumb open mouth cow faced look he gets when he is trying to process a mental thought all the while looking and grunting into his phone. I heard a young woman’s voice through the phone’s speaker. “Where are you? What is going on?” she said.
I grabbed the Young Buck’s hand, the one holding the phone, and said, “He’s at the World Championship Masterbation Contest, if you’ll excuse him he has to compete right now.”
I heard a “What?” through the phone as I waved at the young pubescent female face and hung up the phone.
“That was not cool,” said the Young Buck.
“Yeah, well you know the rules: ‘No cell phones in the man cave.’ “
“Can I have a beer?”
“No, you’re too young to be drinking beer.”
He lit up a joint, took a drag, and passed it to me.
“Listen, you little piss ant,” I took a drag and started to cough. “How can you breath in that shit.”
“This is good Bohemian bud.”
“Yeah, well it dries out my throat and makes me cough.”
“Here have a beer,” said the Young Buck as he opened the frig grabbed two and handed me one.
“Thanks, now pay attention. As I was saying God stopped by the other day.” As he began to open his mouth, I pointed my finger at him, gave him a semi-stink eye and said, “Don’t.” I kept the finger and the stink eye on him until he closed his half-open oral orifice.
“You were about to say, ‘Did I talk to God?’ ”
I continued, “You’re a bad liar. If you’d listen instead of tuning me out …”
“If you’d say something interesting …”
“Little shit.”
“Old man.”
“As I was saying God stopped by. I didn’t so much talk to him as listen. Okay?”
“Okay. So God was really here?”
“Are you listening? Yes. He sat in the talk-to-God armchair over there.”
“Why do you call it that?”
“Because whenever God comes here that is where he sits. Is that so hard for you to wrap your head around?”
“Give me back my phone.”
“Shut up and listen, you might learn something.”
“I doubt it.”
“Yeah, you’re probably right. You want this back?” I held up his phone with both hands in such a manner that I could have snapped it in half.”
“Don’t break it!”
“You seem concerned. I’m glad to see you care about something. If you want your phone in one piece then you’ll have to wait until you are leaving here. Otherwise, one phone – two pieces. the decision is yours.”
“That’s no fair.”
“So? You came by here remember?”
“Yeah.” He slumped into his seat.
“Don’t pout.”
“Why not?”
“It makes me sad. I might get so torn up that I accidentally might snap this thing in half by accident.”
“Don’t!”
“On purpose.” I tossed the phone onto the bean bag chair. “As I was saying God was singing …”
“Don’t Rain on My Parade.”
“You were paying attention?”
“Yes, I hang on your every word.”
“Pretty funny.”
“That I hang on your every word?”
“No, that God was singing ‘Don’t Rain on My Parade.’ “
“Why?”
“Do I have to explain everything to you? The president of the United States wanted a big parade on the 4th of July. Not to honor our country, or what we stand for but to honor himself. And God pissed all over it.”
“Don’t you think it’s disrespectful to say you were talking to God?’
“Don’t you think it’s disrespectful that people all over the world say they talk to him every day?”
“Why?”
“Did it ever occur to you that they are lying?”
“Hum.”
“Or delusional, I’ll take that as a ‘No.’ Listen, there are all these folks who don’t have a legitimate argument, but want something magical to go their way so they tell everyone that it’s God’s wish, or God told them to do it. As long as they aren’t Son-of-Sam or someone like that then they are allowed to get away with that horse shit.”
“I don’t know.”
“Is that smoke coming off the top of your head? I know, this is hard to take in. It’s a thought that requires a conclusion and you can’t google it to find out because it is asking you to think for yourself.”
“What?”
“QED”
“Who’s that?”
“You’ve seen the James Bond movie where they refer to someone as Q?”
“Oh yeah, but what’s that got to do with God?”
“Oh geez, who do you think God is?”
“Q?”
“We are going nowhere fast. Let me just finish telling you about God’s stopping by.”
“God was here?”
“God? Beer? Armchair? Remember?”
“Yeah, you don’t have to sound so hostile.”
“You don’t have to act so stupid.”
“That’s mean.”
“Aw, I’m sorry. Did I hurt your feelings? “
“Shut up.”
“Oh no, I hurt your feelings. Are you offended too?”
“Shut up.”
“Does this mean you’re leaving?”
“Do you have anymore beer?”
“Yes, so I guess that means ‘No,’ which is good.”
“Why?”
“Because it give me a chance to try and cram some sense into you.”
“Good luck.”

man with beard
Not the Young Buck

“Yeah, I know. Low percentage and all that, but you gotta try.”
“Why did you say you talked to God?”
“Why? Because I’m sick and tired of the stupid claiming some moral high ground over this shit. That’s why. Look, you can’t reason with them because they BELIEVE. You gotta fight faith with faith.”
“Will that work?”
“Probably not, but then nothing else has worked either. What stuns me is how easily they are manipulated by the rich and powerful who claim all kinds of patriotic or religious stuff in an effort to get something over on them.”
“Like what?”
“Like ‘right to work’ or ’tax cut.’ The first means companies have the right to fire you and there’s nothing you can do about it. The idea of the rich when it comes to a tax cut is they don’t pay.”
“Oh.”
“Look, the list goes on and on. Can you think of one thing Trump has done to help you?”
“He’s president right?”
“Wow, you are spot on. How about McConnell? He’s been a senator for like 36 years. Can you name one thing he’s done to help people?”
“He’s in Congress or something, right?”
“Right? How did you get so smart? Were you awake during history? I can think of many things McConnell has done to screw up this country, but when it comes to ‘that vision thing,’ or simply helping people with some legislation I can’t think of a single thing. I do know he’s gotten rich. His wife keeps getting jobs in the Republican administrations, yet I never hear of her doing anything to help folks, just herself and her family.”
“Why is that?”
“Good question – ‘Why is that?’ Hey, I gotta go. I think the brownies need to come out of the oven.”
“Brownies?”
“Are you hungry?”
“I got the munchies.”
“Really?”
“Say, did you know I’d be stopping by?”
“Bright boy, there is hope for you.”
