Okay, here’s a prediction. Scott will be opposed to any more counting of ballots until he is for counting all the ballots, until the law will prevent that from happening, and he will lose.

Here’s how this is going to play out in the Senate race in Florida. Rick Scott is calling for him to be declared the winner based on the election night results. He is claiming all kinds of fraud by the Democrats. This has no basis in fact. The fact is, and the reason Scott is jumping up and down to stop any counting of more ballots, there was a machine in Boward county that malfunctioned. It was one of the machines that counts the ballots in Boward County. Boward County is Democratic, about 70% Democratic. The counting machine “undercounted” about 24,000 ballots. That means it didn’t read the ballot and kicked it out. Therefore these ballots, which weren’t counted as part of the election night count will be counted now. This is what has Scott worried. He’s ahead by 12,000 votes. If 70% of the 24,000 ballots are Democratic that would be almost 15,000 votes. However that might not be enough. We’ll see. But if it puts Nelson ahead, then we’ll see Scott yelling to count all the votes, including the absentee ballots sitting in post offices. The Miami Herald found mail carts full of absentee ballots sitting in post offices. Here’s the interesting thing, the Florida law says if the ballots were not received by election day they aren’t counted! Crazy, I know, but hey that’s their rule.

Once again Boward County is leading the way in screw ups and incompetence. The ballot was poorly designed. The ballot in that county had the Senate nominees listed in the lower right hand corner and this resulted in many people not reading that far in the ballot and not checking off their choice. This is called an “undervote” when it is shown that the votes in that area are way under the rest of the state. In Boward Count the number of people who didn’t vote for Senator were 27,000, which is a lot.

 

Meanwhile, Sinema won the senate seat in Arizona. The first Dem to hold that seat in quite awhile.

It’s Veterans Day. A day of remembrance.

Donald Trump is in Europe for the big parade. He was supposed to go visit the graves of the American fallen, but he skipped it. He didn’t show up for dinner at the Museum D’Orsay last night. They waited two hours for him. Some have said that the reason he didn’t show u was because it was for world leaders. (Ha ha get it? “He’s no world leader. He’s the president of the United States.”)
So people are wondering why he’s there. As I mentioned earlier, he’s there to meet with Putin. Russian media announced it. The White House didn’t.
Apparently, Jim Jordan and Bob Goodlatte are there too. They are huddling in Trump’s hotel to figure out what to do after the shellacking the Republicans took in the election. Somehow I’m on the email of “Fight4Freedom” and I get all kinds of wacky emails from them. Here’s one just before the election:

Republicans in Congress make the job too complicated. I tell my colleagues it’s simple: DO WHAT WE SAID!
• We said we’d repeal Obamacare
• We said we’d secure the border
• We said we’d defund Planned Parenthood
• We said we’d cut spending
• We said we’d reform welfare
Yet none of these things have been accomplished.

We have an obligation to the voters who elected President Trump and the Republican majorities in the House and Senate to DELIVER.

They have accomplished nothing!
Not the things above and not much of anything else; except putting our country deeper in debt, giving a huge tax break to the super rich who didn’t really ask for it, or need it.
To pay for it they took away the two tax breaks most middle class Americans use and count on: the home mortgage deduction and the deduction for state and local taxes.

Let’s review the things Jordan says they want to accomplish and ask yourself, “Do you want them to do these things?”
– Do you want them to repeal Obamacare? They’ve tried to repeal it 70 times. They’ve done everything they could to make it more expensive and harder to obtain, yet, people like it.
– They said they’d secure the border. What does that mean? God knows. It’s been pointed out time and time again that the problem isn’t the physical barrier at the border. But hey, Trump said Mexico would pay for it. Yeah, cut through those ranches of good red Republicans what the heck.At any rate this remains ill-defined and is only a talking point to stir up hatred.
– They said they’d defund Planned Parenthood, but they didn’t. Why? Apparently, women like to get health care services. It’s cheap and effective. Oh right. It allows women control over their bodies. Can’t have that huh Jim? This comes down to a simple question – abortion. And I ask you Mr. Jordan, “who ya gonna kill?” You’ve decided to play judge and kill the mother.
– They said they cut spending. that means they want to cut the safety net programs the poor and middle class depend on. Why? Their rich donors don’t need it so fuck the everyone else, that’s why.
– They said they’d reform welfare. You mean like stop giving handouts to corporations? Oh no you mean – Their rich donors don’t need it so fuck ‘em.

Gee, why haven’t they accomplished any of these things?
It’s really simple.
People don’t want them to do these things.

Of course Jim Jordan doesn’t care. He was elected from one of the most gerrymandered districts in the country. A tiny strip that runs north and south through the state of Ohio. It’s very red Republican.

This is the land of conspiracy theories and scares.

The odd thin is that these are just the people who need all the things Jordan is trying to eliminate.

The old Chinese curse is “May you live in interesting times.” Boy, do we.

Today’s screed could be called: “Which state has the most corrupt recount?”

And the entrants are:

Florida,

Arizona,

Georgia.

There are more but these stand out to me.

First Florida: It has two entrants. Both the Governor’s race and the Senate race. Fascinatingly, the Republicans are whining about counting all the votes. Mark Rubio has made such a statement. The Miami Herald found post office trundle carts full of bound absentee ballots sitting in a post office. The Republican officials are like, “Gosh, do we have to count those too?” WTF? Yes.

Then there’s either Florida or Georgia where a bunch of absentee ballots were messed up by Hurricane Michael. “Do we have to count those?” Uh, yeah.

Then there’s Arizona and its senate race. On election night the Republican nominee claimed victory by some 9,000 votes. Minor problem, they forgot to include 432,000 votes from a mostly Democratic area. Do you think that might change the outcome? Uh, yeah. Now the Democratic nominee is up and the Republicans are crying unfair. “Why would you count all the votes? We already won!” Oh boy. And the 432 doesn’t include another Democratic stronghold in the state that hasn’t been counted.

I don’t know what happened with the two counties in Montana that were mostly Democratic and native American that the Republicans tried to eliminate the voters by demanding physical addresses on voter ID cards and then moved the voting place miles out of town. I know the Dem lost. Shows that suppression can still work.

But for most corrupt I gotta go with Georgia. I mean, come on, kicks over 700,000 off the voting rolls, closes hundreds of voting places in Democratic strongholds, puts up ridiculous voter ID laws, then oversee his own election? That is corruption – plain and simple. 

But the times I pray are changing.

Amazingly, candidates that won went through their districts asking for people to vote for them and listening to the people in their district. Wow. What a strategy. As Tip O’Neill used to say, “Everyone likes to be asked.” Maybe, that’s why Dave Brat lost? Besides, being a dick he wouldn’t even meet with his constituents, wouldn’t tell them where he would be, held phony town halls where you couldn’t ask him direct questions, mansplained economics to reporters and his constituents (and got it wrong), and claimed all the people at his phony town halls were paid protestors. 

Then there was the nurse from Illinois who ran and won. She’s black, a Democrat, in an 85% white, very Republican district. Her strategy? “Be everywhere, all the time.” She went into places in her district that hadn’t seen a Dem in decades. She won going away!

Yeah, things appear to be changing. I hope. I pray.

In other news, Trump is pulling back from his nominee for acting Attorney General. Maybe, he feels something is in the air, like he can’t get away with this one. I dunno.

Was it the over 1,000 protests yesterday?

Was it the unconstitutionality of him trying to appoint a person to a principal position that hasn’t been confirmed by the Senate for a job?

Was it that this guy’s last job was working for a company that bilked millions from unsuspecting people?

Was it that his last gig was as a commentator on right wing media outlet and had an organization name below him that was set up by dark money with he as the only employee and seemed the only purpose was to give him a credential below his name?

Was it his views on the judiciary as being an inferior branch of government?

Or perhaps his stating that the Supreme Court really can’t determine what the law is?
(As laid out in the 1803 case of Marbury vs Madison.)

Or was it his saying the Hillary should be indicted?

Or that Mueller is overstepping his bounds and that investigation has found nothing, that there is nothing to find, and therefore should be shutdown?

I’m going with the last one mentioned. Just a hunch, why else would Trump have plucked this idiot out of Iowa and forced him to be Jeff Sessions chief of staff?

We are now going through the standard distancing routine for Trump:

“I hardly know the guy, but people say good things about him, a lot of people.”

Next will be:

“He only worked for me in a minor capacity, very minor.”

then full demotion to coffee boy and bye-bye.

In other news Trump is having another secret meeting with his boss. Yes, the president of the United States will be going on a boot licking mission to Europe. He will meet with the G7, insult our friends and allies, make some outrageous statements and then will secretly meet one on one with Putin where he will get down on all fours – kiss the ring, lick the boots and do whatever else Vlad tells him to do.

How do we know this?

Oh, did you think the White House released that meeting in their schedule of what the president is doing? No.

Come on. The only source of Trump and Russia is the Russian News Agencies and, of course, Vladimir himself.

I made it to my first protest in thirty nine years. It was everything I expected. It had that lovely disorganized feel to it. First off the place had been moved, which was fortunate because the first place picked was under construction. There was nowhere to assemble. I finally found the other location and drove by to see a small band of souls standing forlonely on the sidewalk. Trying to park my car at the closest available lot was impossible because all the spaces not taken had traffic cones in front of them and there were three or maybe five motorcycle cops there. (  To translate back to the 60’s “the man” was ready to come down on the situation. ) 

I parked at the next lot one street down. Five bucks – one hour – not bad. I took my sign out. It’s a thing of beauty. Made from a recently acquired greenhouse steel semi hoop, which before you bend it is a straight dual steel rod with lateral supports. I used part of the box it came in to fashion my signs. Likening it in my mind to a Roman military standard with “TRUMP” on the top where the Roman SPQR would have gone. Below that in descending order was “TRAITOR”, “LIAR”, “THIEF.” I only wanted to hit a few highlights.

As I walked to the assembly point I was joined by a woman going there as well. Her name was Jeannie and she was a self described crazy dog lady. I, of course, had to see a picture of her dogs – rescue – of course. There was a cat in the middle of the picture. So she was also a crazy cat lady, but she played that down. By the time we got to the assembly point there were about one hundred people congregated. Some had signs they were holding up for the passing traffic to see. All were hand done. None of them looked like the pre-printed stuff of a Trump rally.

There was a MAGA sign ( Mueller Ain’t Going Away ) Why? Is there another meaning for MAGA?

We milled around and chatted with others. The crowd grew to perhaps two hundred when a conga line formed that was led by a very musically inclined black man who got the crowd chanting in a call and response mode, reminding me of the videos of the Occupy movement. 

“We Demand to Know the Truth!” 

“Whittaker Should Recuse” and many others over the course of the time I was there. 

The conga line got the rest of the crowd going.

The line would march down to the end of the block, turn around and come back. Every time they went to the far end of the block our chanting faded away, only to be renewed when they came back. 

At some point a car stopped and someone got out with four cases of half bottles of water and a bowl of bananas, which they put on the half wall behind the sidewalk. Yum, bananas and water! I don’t know. It didn’t make sense, and it did. Meanwhile the chanting continued.

By now the crowd had grown to 250. Or so I told Jeannie with a “I’’m pretty good at estimating crowd size” thrown in. (and I am!)

The weirdest thing was people taking pictures of my sign. They would stand right in front of me, three feet away, not say a thing, focus on me and my lovely sign, take a picture, and move on. Even the local news camera guy did it (channel six). It reminded me of the youtube video of the guy taking pictures of girls in their bikinis on a beach, standing right there in front of them, impervious to the little girls trying to swat him away.

The crowd was polite. It was a mixture of ages, races, and -how do you say?- economic levels. There was a blind man and a guy in a wheel chair and what appeared to me to be a homeless guy who stumbled into the proceedings.

The chanting was fading. I was getting cold. I told Jeannie I was leaving. She said she was too. I gave her a ride to her apartment a few blocks away.

On the way home I listened to the second episode of Bagman by Rachel Maddow. It tells the story of the downfall of Spiro Agnew. He was a bully who liked to jab at the press, and people who disagreed with him. His base of supporters loved it. He was also taking envelopes of cash. He virulently denied any wrong doing and lashed out at those who were accusing him. His supporters loved him.

It made me think about the phenomena of the bully. A bully can intimidate another person; a weaker person, either physically or perhaps one without the quick response wherewithal to be able to defend themselves fast enough. What is part of that phenomena is the hangers on to the bully. They always seem to delight in the plight of the person being picked on, as if glad it’s not them and knowing it could be. That’s the thing, it could be them. Yet, they resist acknowledging that. It is because they, like the bully, lack courage. It takes courage to stand up to a bully, to call out the bully. The danger is that you are thus singling yourself out to be next, and that is what they fear the most. 

The bully likes an audience. Someone to encourage and justify the actions being taken. 

Rarely do they get called out. Trump did at the U.N. when his braggadocio got laughed at. Agnew got his too, somewhat. There was a forty page indictment of conspiracy, bribery, extortion, and tax fraud. He got to plead no contest to one charge of tax evasion and had to pay a ten thousand dollar fine (less than what he took in from his illegal activities in a month!) and resign as Vice-President.

He was a crook, a bully, and a liar. Among other things, but his supporters loved him. He told it like it is! He insults the press and his opponents! He’s a man! He’s a crook, a liar, and a bully. Those who supported him were no better.

PPS The new acting AG, Mat Whittaker, whose last job was working for a patent scam business can not Constitutionally be the acting AG. There’s this thing called the Constitution that forbids it. Picky, I know, but anyone in a principal job, as defined by the Constitution must be approved by the Senate. Even if you are in the position as “acting.” Sorry Matty. Rule of law and all that. Bye-bye. 

Oh Donnie, didn’t think that through? Why would he start now? Too bad. Maybe, Rod Rosenstein will have to take over until a new AG can be appointed and confirmed by the Senate? Just sayin’

Oh, and Ms “I dye my nose hair” Karen Handler lost her congressional seat after all the votes were counted.

And in Arizona the senate race? They forgot to count 432.000 votes on election night when the Republican claimed victory. Those 432,000 ballots were from a strongly Democratic area, and there’s another strongly Democratic area they didn’t count the votes either.

And in the Georgia Governor’s race, the Republican nominee has claimed victory and tried to begin moving into the state house. Except there was a law suit saying he couldn’t do that because he couldn’t as Secretary of State validate his own election to Governor. so he resigned as Sec. of State and tried to move in. Whoa buddy. Now you have to wait. It’s not been certified and there is a minor problem with a bunch of ballots damaged by a hurricane that haven’t been counted, from a very Democratic area. Not to mention the over 700,000 people you kicked off the voting rolls.
