160 Days until the election on November 3rd

240 Days until the Inauguration on January 20, 2021

I just watched a show about the life of Margaret Mitchell. She wrote “Gone With The Wind” by starting at the end, writing the last chapter first. And so I will begin my memories of Memorial Day in a similar way, with what I remembered first, which was the thing that happened last when I was a kid.

It was the soda truck.

Every year on Memorial Day we would go into town to watch the parade, which ended at the Community Center, the old Governor’s Mansion. While the adults were listening to speeches on the front steps we kids were around back where the soda truck was. It was a square flatbed with side fences piled high with crates of glass bottles of cold soda. We knew that the minute the speeches were over in the front the two young men guarding all those cold sodas would start handing them out. It was chaos when that happened. I remember some kids putting their thumb over the top and shaking the bottle and then squirting their buddies. It seemed wasteful and disrespectful.

There were men walking around in their uniforms from World War II and I guess the Korean War as well. I remember Mr. Myrick was often the speaker on the front steps. He wore a tan uniform, not fancy, but clean and well pressed. He had a quiet manner, quiet but intense.

The Memorial Day Parade started on the street next to the graveyard on the far end of town. When I became a scout I marched in the parade. We formed up there and went over the hill where the British had set up during The Battle of Ridgefield passing first by Colonel Sirena’s house on the right. He had a curved reddish pink driveway and was reputed to be in The John Birch Society. Ridgefield had the strongest chapter. On the left at the top of the hill was Casagmo. It was a huge orange brick mansion. I remember going into the barns of Casagmo. They were for horses. There were big ribbons from shows on the wooden entry walls. I never saw anyone there. The house, as far as I knew, was abandoned. Later, squatters started fires in it. Eventually, it was torn down and replaced with high end condos.

The Parade continued down Main Street toward the business district, passing first The Elms Inn on the right and then the Ballard estate on the right. We’d march through the two or three block business area leaving Saint Stephens on the right and the Community Center on the left. We’d go down to the Congregational Church and turn around the big horse fountain in the Y junction.

When we were little kids we used to go to the Inkster’s house which was on the rise next to The Keeler Tavern and sit and watch the parade from that vantage point. Later the house was owned by the Minots. In order to make the turn the parade had to move to the right half of the road. It would march around the fountain counter clockwise and head back up Main Street to The Community Center. This meant the head of the parade passed the tail. There were always two marching bands in the parade. My brother and I used to like to run to the point where the two bands passed each other and were side by side. The clash of the two tunes was what we wanted to hear.

The Keeler Tavern, by the way, is where the Revolutionary troops were set up. In the back of the tavern you can still see a canon ball that the British fired upon the American troops; if you know where to look and which shingle to remove.

At the end of the parade came the fire trucks and behind them the kids on their bicycles decked out in red, white, and blue bunting in the spokes. The really cool kids had clipped a playing card to the front fork of their bike so that the card hit the spokes and made a clicking sound. They were a ragtag bunch, and we envied them.

One year as the fire trucks were coming down toward the fountain they got a call for a fire and had to jump out of the parade and with sirens blaring they left – somehow, I don’t remember how.

I do remember feeling a sense of pride and “can-do-it-tiveness.” We had won World War II. There was a sense of optimism. People talked about the GI Bill and how it helped that generation go to college. How they were the best students the professors had ever seen. Housing was being built out on Long Island and everywhere. A house cost twenty five thousand (or was it fifty?) Whatever it was I remember it being equivalent to a person’s salary for a year in a good paying job.

Polio had been stopped, as had many other diseases with antibiotics. We were discovering things like DNA and a challenge had been made to go to the Moon. We were proud. We were all one. We felt there was nothing we could not accomplish. We had the scientists, the engineers, the gumption, the knowhow – It was a great time to be alive.

People talked about FDR and Ike, about the Depression and how they got through it, about the World War but only a little bit. Most of what I knew about the war came from Walter Cronkite’s narration of black and white films from the war on a show called The Twentieth Century. There were still people alive from The First World War. I remember when LIFE Magazine announced the death of the last survivor from The Civil War. He was a young bugler, now age 96 or so.

People were talking about buying Army Surplus stuff. Jeeps in a box were $125. There was all kinds of army green stuff. Metal boxes, canvas canteen sacks, if only one could figure out how to use the stuff.

Yes, it was a different time. A time of pride, a time of being in it all together.

Today? Today we have a president who has failed in his most basic responsibility – to keep us safe. He doesn’t know how. He wants the stage, but not the headache. The reality of the job eludes him. He has no idea. Every day we hear how we have shrunk from another responsibility. Rather than stepping into the breech and leading, this president has told others it is their job and criticized them when it reflects badly on him This president has undertaken the biggest assault on our government and our way of life. We are not acting like the great country we can be. Instead, we are viewed with abhorrence and dismay around the world. We are treated like a third world country and cautions are being raised by others about us. Us! The leaders of the free world! But alas, no longer. Our president has turned his back on them, and us with a “you figure it out” attitude. Meanwhile, we tries vainly to take credit for that which he claims to have done, but hasn’t.

The phony and the fraud are exposed everyday, and everyday we lose a bit more of our pride and our dignity.

This virus has exposed our weaknesses and we have the challenge in front of us. To rebuild, to fight, and to make this country and the world a better place.

161 Days until the election on November 3rd

241 Days until the Inauguration on January 20, 2021

The virus is still out there. It can still kill you. Nothing has changed.

What has changed, it seems, is some people’s attitudes toward this situation.

Nothing else.

You can still get it.

You can still die from it.

There is no vaccine.

There might be some therapies that are helping, but it’s too early to tell.

Trump continues his assault on our democracy aided and abetted by his cronies in Congress and in the executive branch, the media, and miscellaneous “characters” in the world.

Wash your hands.

Wear a mask.

Stay at Home.

Social Distance.

I was going to write about the most recent crimes of Donald Trump and his administration and then I saw the clip from Comedy Central. It showed people describing Trump’s behavior with clips illustrating what they were talking about. The commentators said it was probably getting laughs on Comedy Central, but they weren’t laughing, neither was I. I saw a man who was confused, addled, and who couldn’t form or read whole sentences. I saw a man who would get half way through a thought and couldn’t remember what he was saying, who struggled to try to complete what ever he had started out to say and have to resort to nonsense phrasing. It wasn’t funny. It was reality. The reality of Donald Trump.

Temple af Artemis

Now, onto the most recent crimes. It’s all in a day over at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

Trump has now threatened two states with withhold money from them if they don’t do his bidding. Rachel pointed out that at his impeachment hearings there was a constitutional law professor who used this very example as a clear example of an impeachable offense.

Mike Pompeo apparently had dinners in the State Department for high rolling Republican donors. That is a political event on the government’s dime. That is illegal.

Donald Trump has threatened to withhold all money from the World Health Organization. While it may not be a crime, it certainly is stupid.

Meanwhile the pandemic rages in our country and we have no plan.

OMG, OMG! Did you hear?

Crocidile on a dock.
Croc…Gator…Croc! (Gator)

So many little tidbits, but the biggest one is Nancy Pelosi.

She said she was worried for the president and his health.

Aw. So nice.

She said given his age and weight, seeing as how he is MORBIDLY OBESE …

When she was asked about that comment later. Wasn’t she worried about the reaction from the president? Her response was beautiful. Why would he be upset? He’s always commenting on other’s appearance? Yeah, Nancy. If you can’t take it Donnie, don’t dish it!

I fully expect the right has lost its mind over that.

Speaking of losing their minds. There’s the Susan Rice email. OMG, the reaction by the right is unbelievable. I guess they failed 5th grade reading comprehension. Oh wait, it doesn’t matter what it really says. All they have to do is put out the headline because their followers don’t read the article. They just put up the headline on their facebook page.

The National Review put up a headline that said based on the email Comey found nothing to charge Flynn with. Ehhhh, not really true. Not 100% wrong, but not the point of what was written in the memo. But who cares? ( I do. I do. )

The point was that although they had no hard evidence that Flynn had done anything illegal it was concerning that he had had so many interactions with the Russian ambassador and Comey was instructed by Rice and by Obama to do everything “by the book.”

The “by the book” comment is another talking point on the far right – as if to suggest that otherwise Comey would not have done that when in fact the opposite is true.

George Orwell’s predictions in 1984 keep coming true.

TMBO – is going to be my new name for our president The Morbidly Obese One.

Day 1217 – An Exploration into Values

Day 1217 – An Exploration into Values

You Got a Problem with That?

Tuesday May 19, 2020

166 Days until the election on November 3rd

246 Days until the Inauguration on January 20, 2021

Robert Persig’s subtitle to his book “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” was “An Inquiry into Values.”

As “Field and Stream Magazine” said about Richard Brautigan’s “Trout Fishing in America” that “It had little to do with trout fishing,” so “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” has little to do with motorcycle maintenance except as a metaphor for value and in that there is a lot to unpack.

I realized that my screeding is, or has become, more than my bitching about our current political situation. It is an exploration and an examination into our values. The idea of American Exceptionalism, the America portrayed to the world by Hollywood, by the Peace Corps, by the CDC, by our military, by our economic presence, by so many things big and small they all speak to our ideals and our values.

Donald Trump has been busy showing another set of values to the world. He and his ilk are sending a very different message. The question is “Is this what we want to become?”

When I think of the things that make this country different and a model that others want to emulate none of those qualities are displayed in what Mr. Trump is doing, saying, or how he is acting.

When I ask people what they like about the U.S.A. they never mention the programs and practices of this administration or the ideas that they have promulgated. The government programs that are most mentioned are those started by Democrats. In fact, I can’t think of a single program that a Republican has put forward that has actually helped people. Wait – EPA, Nixon – that’s one. Along with the Clean Water Act. Of course, ever since they were passed Nixon’s fellow Republicans have been trying to degrade and tear down those laws.

Okay, moving on. Beside getting rid of four Inspector Generals this past Friday what else has been going on? Note: one of those IGs was looking into the Secretary of State. Shocking. Just because Pompeo was trying to sneak arms to Saudi Arabia? Come on. Oh and he had an intern walking his dog and picking up his laundry. That’ll teach that kid statecraft.

Well, by way of introducing the next topic next week is Memorial Day and we can celebrate with the head of the White House Corona Virus Task Force, Mike Pence, the end of Covid-19. Begone! Yeah. Mike predicted, “We’d be looking at the virus in our rear view mirror” come Memorial Day. And so we shall. So what if the virus is on the rise throughout most of the country? Let’s celebrate. Eric Trump has said that the pandemic is actually an attempt by the Democrats to hold down his father’s rallies. I say no. Hold the rallies. Don’t let no little virus stop you.

Rachel revealed a fascinating little tidbit last night. It explains how we got here. Why Pence said we’d be looking at the virus in our rearview mirror come Memorial Day, and it gives a window into the workings of Donald’s mind. Let me say, his mind is a scary place. It reminds me of a course I took on the universe and how our planet was formed. When the lecturer got to the point of describing the early cells they had all this DNA swirling around colliding with each other, breaking apart, reforming, breaking apart. It wasn’t until cells developed a nucleus that the barrage stopped. I have the impression that Trump’s brain has no nucleus and that it is continually being bombarded by bits and fragments of information and stimuli.

It turns out that Trump didn’t like the death figures he was seeing from the virus. He wanted to open the country back up and he wanted data to support his point of view. (Truth be damned! Oh. Sorry.) So an economist type developed a model and found a function that would predict what Trump wanted to see. It showed a dramatic drop off in deaths come the middle of April. Donnie likey; Donnie fuse in brain. Jared likey. Mikey likey. Mikey repeat predictions to the press. Jared based his work (does he work? Or does he just go around gumming up the works?) and his policy mentions on this (I don’t think he really does policy. He just talks about policy.)

So. So the White House was basing what was going to happen based on this model that had no basis in epidemiology only in some curve fitting function based on the data they had at a particular point in time.

I understand the desire to want to see results in line with expectations, but this? Come on. I want a person heading up a pandemic response like Andrew Cuomo, not that sneaky fraud Pence.

OMG. How much longer? Not the stay at home, the idiocy, the cruelty, the destruction.

Our experts keep saying we have no time to lose. That we must act now. But our leaders are congratulating each other on a job well done. Of course like the Monty Python movie where they call, “Bring out your dead” and one body get touted out only to say, “I’m not dead yet!” That fellow gets beaned with a black jack. The governors believing the president and his minions have to ignore the dead and dying that call out for help. Not a problem. We are all fine. Bop. Sorry. You were messing up our illusion.

To quote Dr. Bright’s testimony before Congress, “We are in deep shit.”
