Day 1136 When the Right Cries the Blues
Wednesday November 7, 2019
363 Days until the 2020 election and 448 days until the Inauguration
Dennis Prager is someone I only marginally knew of until recently when a right wing friend of mine kept posting articles from PragerU. I thought PragerU was a university of some sort. It’s not. It’s a website for Dennis Prager, who is described as a social conservative. That’s being kind. I’d call him an annoying blowhard in the ilk of Milo Yiannopoulis, only older and fatter. (I know. It’s so demeaning of me. Sigh.)
Prager was on Bill Mahrer’s show the other week. My friend posted an article by Dennis shortly thereafter in which he complained that he was booed. He listed a number of things that he said he was booed for saying. Having watched the show, and my friend has not, in fact she hadn’t even read the article (She likes to post these things with a ‘To Read Later’ headline) I have to say that I don’t remember him being booed for any of the stuff he innocently tries to say he was booed over.
What I do remember was him being a classic bore, in the sense that he monopolized most of the conversation, said stupid things that enraged the other guests, didn’t stay on the topic to be discussed and brought in unasked for attack comments. Two stand out in my memory. First he made some general attack on the State Department and I think on Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch in particular. Richard Stengel, the former editor-in-chief at Time Magazine, and a former ambassador and pretty level headed guy was so taken back by Prager’s comments that he said to Prager’s face that what he was saying was absolutely not true. Prager brushed it aside as if it weren’t worth a response. I’ve never seen Stengel so confrontational. But that was just the warm up.
This got the guests way off topic and Bill tried to bring them back to the issue to be discussed and Prager came out with a statement that the left had smeared Kavanaugh and that Kavanaugh was a fine upstanding man and didn’t deserve it. No one asked him for this. It wasn’t part of the discussion. He just vomitted it out there. I don’t know what other think of Kavanaugh but I think he is poorly suited for the Supreme Court. I watched his hearing. I watched his near crying. His blaming the Clintons for his being attacked. I watched him lie to the Senators – repeatedly. I wish Kamal or someone had asked him how that “drinking game” was played. (“See, Senator you get a girl drunk. Then bend her over and one guy enters her from behind while the other goes around to her mouth …”) I remember how he tried to interfere with a woman trying to get an abortion by delaying her being let out of a holding facility until it was too late. Sorry, I don’t buy the “now I’m a choir boy” routine. But Dennis Prager says he’s a fine upstanding man. Bull.
So Prager like so many of these right wing blowhards when he gets his hand slapped cries foul and “What did I do? All I said was …”
He can’t even be honest about what happened on Bill Mahrer’s show. He’s not honest in the other things he says. He is dangerous in that he sounds kind of okay. Until, he goes on and drops one of his stinkers.

PS Detail from The Judgement of Paris by Rubens (which Manet used later on.) Here we see Paris awarding Venus the golden apple for beauty. Juno, queen of heaven, looks on and is she pissed! From the National Gallery, London.
